All I can say is it has been years since I got rid of that big old clunky spring .

In truth most of the time was getting the brake spring out of my parts truck.

30 minute job no more problems a 100,000 miles ago

I unfortunately never had enough skill to get the torsion spring to work. If someone has more patience and a more developed fabrication skill and tool set I think it’s definitely possible to make it work. My brass bushing would always get squeaky no matter how much I greased it. I think my problem was not having the bushing perfectly parallel with the straight part of the spring. The arm of the pedal that held the torsion spring bushing was also getting in the way of the Ace Spring so I had to cut it off - I felt bummed but there’s too many other projects that I need to devote time towards so perhaps some day I’ll try again but not in a few years I don’t think. It was fun having a go at it either way!

I took the time to machine brass bushings, it worked, but I liked the linear spring better.

I took the torsion spring off & used the linear spring for the 4cyl 4x4. I also cut the arm off of the pedal where the torsion sat because it was hitting the linear spring and have had no problems since.

Yeah so you and me ended up with the same setup. I heard some trucks don’t require the arm to get cut off.

Mine did not require any alteration to the peddle.

For some reason the arm on the pedal was strumming the spring and I could push the spring over so it wouldn't hit it but a couple of days later it would move back and start hitting the spring so I cut through the welds and knocked the arm off.

No interference on my truck or I might have hooked the spring in a different place .

    You may have.
On my Tacoma there is a tab with a hole on the dashboard bar that I hooked my linear spring to and the other end to the clevis pin on the pedal. That tab was a PIA to get to but it is there.

Thanks for the detailed write up and FSM references. Makes life alot easier. I just took that torsion spring out yesterday and am now playing with the pedal height

I was wondering what that switch was for and my cruise control does not work - thanks much for the info!

Jumping in on the linear spring side, removed the torsion spring for the #70 Ace spring. I took the entire assembly out to clean the dust off, but took maybe 30 min tops and killed any squeaking or sticking of the pedal.

Bringing this thread back to life.
Does anyone have a picture or dimensions of the #70 spring from Ace Hardware. My Clutch pedal doesn't always fully release, sometimes have to use my foot to bring it up the final 1.5 inches.

    Wow blast from the past.

If I can find one I will measure it .

I used a brake return spring from my parts truck 87 pick up been working fine for years.

I had the same problem of the pedal not returning. #70 IS the size.

    [IMG] [IMG]
Like homegrown said above the tab is under the dash above the stock torsion spring for use …

delete the stock spring and hook up the #70 and you are in business..

    [IMG] [IMG]
and for the record here is the gouge the torsion spring created and the offender with what’s left of the bushings..

    Good luck!

In Canada, each clips are now $12.60, over $40 with taxes for the 3 of them. Since we got tired of changing them every once in a while and the outrageous price of tiny clips.... well we spent 10x that on R&D to come up with some Low friction, long lasting Carbon Fiber reinforced Nylon bushings.... Anyway, we have a few left if anyone is interested of testing them.

What's the difference between the #70 Ace spring and the 4cyl return spring. From the photo the Ace spring looks like it might be a little weak compared to the Toyota spring? Thoughts?

Does anyone have the part# for the Toyota spring? Would be nice to include that in this thread.
