Well I can shift but clutch won't engage in any gear.

I can lift the pedal by putting my foot under it but it just won't engage. I've replaced a lot of clutches over the years but I've never had one do this. Stuck in the disengaged position?

1998 Tacoma 6 cyl, 4 speed. I was 4 wheeling downhill, I depressed the clutch pedal there was a slight thump and the pedal stayed on the floor. When I got to the bottom of the hill that was it. I could shift into all gears but it was like I was in neutral whatever gear I was in.

What could give that would stick the clutch into the disengaged position???

Fluid was low, I filled it up, no leaks but I can't pump up any pedal. In order to pump it I need to have one foot under and one foot over the pedal.

Indy, I also think it's stuck but I have never seen or heard of that before???

Very likely a broken clutch spring or arm, on the clutch basket.

if it was really low you could have air in the line.

I'm having a hard time understanding how low fluid (or an airlock) would stick a clutch in the disengaged position.

Stick your nose under the dash with a flashlight . Should be an over center spring on the pedal shaft that assists with clutch pedal return .Is the return spring connected ?
EDIT ; have also seen the release bearing pop off the slave cylinder shaft on some models . This would cause the clutch to stay fully engaged when the bearing gets jammed against the pressure plate diaphram fingers .All depends on the model of transmission mind you .
As mentioned above , can you pop an inspection cover off the bell housing and have a quick look ?

Ive never runinto it, but someone has to be first:eek:

Id guess with enough crud built up and some old/weak fingers it could happen.

Sounds like slave cylinder. Locate it, and move the clutch pedal to see if there is any movement of the cylinder. Had this issue when i owned a wrx.

Either the hydraulic system has failed and is holding pressure in the lines and keeping the clutch slave cylinder pushrod extended, or the clutch itself has failed inside the transmission bellhousing.

Crawl under and see if the slave cylinder pushrod is extended. If it is (probably), crack the bleeder screw and see if it comes back. If it stays down that means there is no spring pressure pushing on it and there is a problem inside the bellhousing with the clutch or the release fork or throwout bearing. If it comes springing back with the release of the hydraulic bleeder screw, that would indicate a stuck master cylinder.

If you need new hydraulic cylinders buy them at the dealer or be prepared to use the lifetime warranty that NAPA and most other stores offer on a very regular basis. They are crap, I have sold them, used them, and replaced many under warranty. It's worth the extra money from the dealer if you plan to keep the truck.

Thanks for the suggestions. It gives me a place to start. The truck is still stuck in the woods, but it's on a friends ranch so no real worries. Just hard to check things out.
I'll get it towed some time next week.
