My 96 with almost 200k miles is on its original clutch and it is starting to slip. Was wondering how hard it would be to replace?

Just did mine. It took a night in the shop after work to take it out, and a night in the shop with some help to put it back in. Depending on how dirty stuff is, it’s probably a 8-10 hour job.

    2wd or 4wd?

    5 lug or 6?

There's prob. a pretty good write up if you decide to.

It's easier than a FWD. Get it off the ground as high as you can. 2 foot would be great.

2 feet measured from where? If you're saying the tires should be that far off the ground then he better have some kind of high lift transmission jack. Because mine doesn't reach much higher than that.

OP: The answer really depends on your skill level and access to the necessary tools. But it'll be a lot harder than paying someone $800 to do it for you and a lot easier than you think if you have the tools and the time.

I did mine about 5 years ago at ~200k. I took my time, and, had another car to drive while I worked on it. I'm certainly not a trained tech, but I was able to get the job done with help from this forum and others. Working slowly, I took a week of working nights and a solid weekend with no help other than to bleed the clutch.

You will need access to a transmission jack. Some have done it with a regular floor jack, but that would make the job much harder. I did get my flywheel turned at a local machine shop, and, I replaced my slave cylinder while I was at it.

Yes, doing everything is much more likely the new one will last as long as the old one or maybe as long as the truck itself.

2' (prob. more like 1 1/2') under the tires so you can sit up underneath. If you're young enough to not get dizzy rolling around under there, power to you. I have to be straight up. I also don't like things falling on my head. It's easy to adjust a jack to work at a higher height.

I did just have a bud do a cutch on his '04. Those dowels on the engine/trans mating surface were surprisingly tight. Never have seen such a bond there and I've prob. pulled 100 combo's apart. They can really seize up and make you think there has to be another bolt hidden somewhere.

    just something to watch for.

my 1995 4x4 W59 I can take out in about 25 min. They are really easy to do. Then again I have done many before that.

It is really easy but I would suggest separating the xfer case from trans before removing. and when installing be very careful not to screw up the seal.

OP not saying just where the truck lives that can also play into the job .

Who might have worked on the truck before can as well nothing like using SAE sockets that are close enough.

We all have our own tricks picked up over the years .

It can be done alone but I would not want anyone to try that the first time
