Haven't been into my Toyota clutch, but this might apply......
I had a new F150 4x4 that started clutch slip at about 6K.
Before taking it to the dealer and telling him how crappy
this is, i got under with a light and inspected the clutch through
the vent openings in the bellhousing ( I assume the Toyota has some
    openings etc too) .
My problem was a mouse nest in the pressure plate housing.
The trash from the nest spun out between the spring fingers and PP housing resulting in incomplete return to engagement.
As far as I know , mice aren't covered by warranty so I blocked the pedal down and picked all the stuff out with a coat hanger and shop vac with 1/2" plastic hose. Pain in the butt, but easier than dropping the trans !! Never had another problem.
If your clutch slips after you've been parked for more than a few days,
    it's worth a look.

    I never had a problem in 50K miles on my 08 2.7 4x4 but with all these threads about 09 and 10 2.7 clutch problems I'm a little worried.

I agree this looks like an issue with 09 and 10 Tacomas. I have had 4 Tacomas, 96, 00, 05 and 09, and never had a clutch issue with any of them. I was even towing a 2800 lb boat with the 96 and 00 and no issues.

    Here is my update:

Just left the dealer; the service underwriter advised the mechanic had road tested the truck and could not find anything wrong (my luck). I explained that the issue seems to be during very cold temperature, so of course they advised to bring the truck back when it's colder or if it happens again.

I spoke with my local mechanic and explained the whole situation from when the problem first started one year ago at 20K miles. Since I now have just under 49K miles and the problem only happens during very cold temperatures, the problem seems to be a "hydraulic" issue and not the clutch plates themselves.

Question to anyone who has had similar clutch problems; do you know if the cause was the hydraulic system within the clutch or the clutch plates, etc?

    Now I'm scared .

I've had my 2011 5pd 4cyl 4x4 SR5 for just under 2 months. What kind of slip is it? A jump in RPM's or just a catching/engaging different?

Just a wild guess, but a high moisture level in the clutch fluid would give you
    low temp problems maybe.
try bleeding it or having your dealer bleed it .......
This is an awfully new vehicle to be having that type problem unless
    you drive in a swamp.
Easy enough to try while it's still cold eh?

If this does fix it, i'd recommend bleeding the brakes too just in case.
    Good luck.

my clutch went out right before the 36k warranty was up and they gave me the same crap as the OP .. " clutch is a wear item" and all the other crap.. I bought the clutch and had my mechanic install it for less then what they quoted me..

Just to be safe I wanna change out the clutch again around 100,000 miles , except this time I think im gonna go with a clutch I found on the URD site, probably change out the fly wheel while im at it too

    Tacoriffic;
The slipping is under pressure, ie; accelerating onto a highway in 3rd gear, 4th and sometimes 5th gears, @2,500-3,000RPMs- the engine revs up because the clutch is slipping.

Don't get too hung up on the cold thing, it'll just make it harder for them to "duplicate". Tell them it's more prevalent in the cold but occurs regardless. Sucks..I know.

BPachom, I experienced the same issue your did. Clutch slipping stopped for 2-3weeks. I was trying to make it slip, by down shifting on hills, etc, so I could prove it to the Toyota tech before taking it in. Just yesterday it starting slipping again, pretty badly. I'm scheduling an appt for next week. Will update with the findings. I also opened a case with Toyota corporate, so hopefully they will cover some of the cost. I have 43K on my 09 4x4 5pd 4cyl AC.

    NHTundra;

Well after my visit to to the dealer a few weeks ago (when they could not find a problem), I spoke with my local mechanic who suggested to start with the change and bleeding the hydraulic system and go from there.

My truck was in the local shop yesterday for the following:

    1. Clutch hydraulic fluid change & system bleed
    2. Fluid change for transfer case, transmission, front & rear differentials
    3. Lube oil & filter.
    4. Tire rotation

So when I picked up the truck and took it for a ride, the clutch seemed to be okay, but it did slip on me a couple of times today, but I do have to say, it was not as bad as it was prior to the service.

Now I will have to bring it back to the dealer again, perhaps leaving it overnight so they can road test first thing in the morning when it's cooler out.

Let us know how you make out, good luck.

    Bob
