    Hello everyone,

I notice that this rubber boot that is attached to clutch slave cylinder is kind of peeling off( see image). Should I be concerned about this? Should I get a new rubber boot?

Boot may still be keeping contaminates out of clutch and flywheel that could otherwise interrupt function and longevity.

It may be totally fine but you can check it really easy by popping it out to see if the inner lip is still there. You might be able to just reach your finger inside the drain/vent hole and into the bell housing and press it back into place properly and be done.

Wow, Black Magic, it has been around forever. I think I last used it on a Datsun 510 in '86. It works.

I actually had a few but I sold my last one with a 2.4L franken motor in probably '89 to a friend that totaled it within a week. I had one with mirrors on the fenders at one point. Super fun cars back when junkyards were still proper junkyards, you could raid parts from Z's and the 200SX for it's dogleg 5 speed. Good times. Unfortunately the tin worm has eaten most of them these days and they are mad expensive.

No, that would be Toyota, I used a lot of different engines because in the mid 80's you could get low mile used JDM engines for like $150 with a coupon from the Recycler. Watanabe in LA if I remember correctly. But I mostly used the L18 block with "poptop" pistons. High compression. But the last engine I had in that car was a combination of a Nissan 2.4L block from a Hardbody truck mated to a L20B head. It requires custom piston machining and a lot else, pretty much a Nissan/Datsun OE part swapping thing. At the time one of my cousins was a well known engine builder and he had a flow bench for heads and I was 17 so he helped me with the machining and anything that took serious knowledge. It was a banger. He actually built the engine for another family member that has held the C-GALT record at El Mirage for like 30 years. A real motor genius. I learned a lot from him. Almost as much as I learned from doing it wrong and breaking things hehe.

That was a 73 510 btw, rare, you can tell it's a 73 if it has a rear window defroster. High tech. I think they only made the 73 for 3 months or something.

That's actually the clutch fork, not the slave cylinder. The boot is fine, they all look like that. Notice how there's a big rectangular drain hole in it anyway? Water could easily get in under the right conditions..

If they were that worried they would have put more effort into building a better boot.

The slave cylinder boot is circled in yellow

Yeah, it's fine, I have run many cars without a boot on the lever covering. If anything it will just let dust out. That area isn't exactly water tight anyway.
