Agree 100%. The first time i took it in they couldnt replicate the problem. the mechanic told me though it was good that i brought it in and established a complaint. This started at 8k miles and he said because of the low mileage, now almost 10k, they were able to warranty it. he said if i waited till it was shot at 20k or so, it would have been tough to get toyota to warranty it.

If they refused to cover a clutch under warranty with only 20,000 on it Toyota would never see another dime from me

yea i feel the same way. the mechanic just said at 10k they wouldnt have any problem with it. but start getting up to 20k + it might take some arguing to get toyota to cover it. in a way i could see why. even though you may have not, how can you prove you didnt do the damage by learning or teaching someone how to drive stick, burned it out offroad, or are just bad at driving it, etc. its your word against their at that point.

I guess if you did have to replace the clutch yourself at 20K, you could install a real truck clutch in it, instead of one with cardboard linings.
I would't have the dealer do it, and I wouldn't use toyota parts. Another case of Toyota building something that only resembles a truck.

I hear ya...but I also know guys who've fried perfectly good clutches in brand new cars doin' stupid things like holding the car on a hill using the clutch.

Can't blame Toyota for protecting themselves against those numb nutz.

Took it to the dealer. It's on record. Couldn't duplicate that day when I was there. Only traveled another 300 miles since then and it's slipped in 2nd, 4th, and 5th. Wish it would go already or get more predictable. @11,000 miles.

My clutch started slipping at about 10,000 miles. Maybe have stalled the truck twice since I purchased it, never burned the clutch, no other issues. Started happening in 4th gear, about a 500rpm increase and then it would grab and drop RPMs to the appropriate level to match the drivetrain. I complained and the techs said it was the ECU (LOL, yeah, how exactly would the ECU raise the engine RPM but not the wheels when the truck is in gear?). I said BS and brought it in again, they then replicated the problem in 3rd and 4th gears. I made an appointment to have a Factory Rep drive the truck and of course the clutch wouldn't slip during the drive. The rep told me "clutches aren't warrantied" and I would be lucky if Toyota split the repair cost with me. He said the 500rpm increase is a known problem but Toyota isn't doing anything about it right now. My truck is getting much worse, I almost got into an accident trying to pass the other day in 3rd gear, lots of RPMs but my truck didn't accelerate at all. Not sure where to go, what to do- going to start looking into the State lemon law and BBB. This sucks, any suggestions? I'm at about 17k miles now.

Nice to hear they took care of ya. I was going to post that there is a problem, but clearly the dealer thought so too. Kinda strange to be like that right from new, but not all Tacoma`s are created equal....

My 2010 has 4,800 miles on it and I noticed the same thing in 4th gear with the engine jumping rpm's and settling back down. I figured it must've been my imagination cause if I put it in 5th gear and step on the gas, it doesn't slip. I too am very easy on it and the truck has never even hauled anything other than me and my wife and has never been offroad. The only other thing I've noticed is that the other day, I was going up a steep road for a few miles and had the truck in 3rd gear at about 2,500 rpms. When I got to the top it seemed like I could smell a little burning. Would this be normal? I've driven tractor trailers all my life so I'm not new to the manual trannies, just not familiar with ones this small.lol

Take it to the dealer Mike and get it on record. I too thought it was my imagination when it first happened. Not the case. Good luck. What dealer did you buy from?

I got it from James Toyota in Flemington. It's going back for the first oil change in the next week or so anyway. Had very good experience with them when I bought the truck. I also had a good experience with Hillside when they did the buyback on my truck. Only reason I didn't buy a truck there was they didn't have one in stock I liked.

Mine just hit 16k yesterday and just started slipping today.
I pulled the boot for the clutch fork and found a mix of gear oil and black dust (from the clutch). A little dust is normal.:frusty:

I am going to call them in the morning to see if they have a loaner car will probably leave it with them because the clutch is soaked with gear oil from the trans.

My truck's got the EXACT same problem as yours, does yours seem to only do it when it's cold out/when the trans/clutch is cold? Mine only does it the first few miles, then stops. Hence why when I took it into the dealer today the SA couldn't get it to slip.

yeah, that shit doesn't work....had mine in 3 times before 36k and they couldn't duplicate th chirping noise from my release bearing, I ended up still paying $740 for a new assembly.... Needless to say I was pissed and the dealership can go fuck themselves!

The slipping was most prominent when it was cold out and then eventually got to the point where it did it all the time and in every gear. I wouldn't put another Toyota clutch in it unless it was covered under the warranty. Good luck.
