    this and that...
clutch start cancel coupled with downhill assist control. gives you the option to start and move on your command, not the inclines.

Sounds like you have no business wheeling the truck let alone those obstacles if you can't properly work the clutch. OP can flame me all he wants but it's pretty obvious he's the target market for an automatic.

Trash talking aside, there are many times offroad an automatic is much, much easier. The exception for me personally is if it's a fully built beast of a creature with deep gears... or sand. Not a fan of an automatic in sand but then again you really need to know how to shift and rev match if you're playing around.

I love the clutch cancel switch function but there's no freakin way I would use it like they advertise! The truck has a real hand brake! Use it!

Clutch Start Cancel worked great on my 1st gen with stock gears and heavy 32" tires climbing up an obstacle in Utah. No drama. Should work the same on the 3rd gen. I am pretty sure I was in 4 low though. Not sure it could do it in 4 high if you are right against a big ledge.

Yeah I’ve got an OR, don’t have the downhill assist. I had downhill assist on my Highlander, which was cool in dry conditions but super slow in wet/muddy. At that point I’d turn off DA, use the selectshift cause it was an AT and maneuver.

Also agree with this. Use the handbrake and resist touching that clutch. I could almost stall the 97 right up against a ledge and never touch the clutch and get it to walk up with little drama. My buddy with his jeep was struggling because he kept pushing in the clutch and losing all his momentum.

    I agree.
4lo 1st gear and clutch start cancel should get you out of most situations. Has never let me down. Trying to do it in 4hi probably made OP's starter pretty hot.

I believe it’s only there for if the switch breaks on the clutch. Doesn’t do much good otherwise. Or you’re too lazy to jump in to start your truck.

not true. I have stalled my fj40
On some nasty stuff and used the starter to grind my way out.

    Different vehicle? How steep?

FJ? I didn't say it wouldn't work. Just not something I depend on. And works better with lower ratios. What is "not true"?

An update. Took the machine in for the fuel pump, asked for a CSC check. Tech found a loose positive cable on the battery, now CSC works! At least on my driveway. And I’m sorry about all the evil things I said about CSC!C2ED1FDB-12D8-4517-B630-FE15B53D4F49.jpg

My Wife uses the CSC to start the truck since she is too short to press the clutch in all the way.

Downhill assist control? We dont get that on a 3rd gen manual. Also CSC is actually very useful when you are on an incline and need to crawl up without breaking your tires loose.
