Clutch Whine/Noise

3rd gen 4cyl Runners have an R150 (pretty sure same as 1st gen Tacomas) but the point is definitely taken...

Not with the 4cyl they don't, they have a W59

still getting used to all the squeaks, whines, and rattles of my new to me rig, but i could use input from everyone (granted i know it's hard to diagnose a noise/symptom you can't see or hear).

i've got a higher pitched whine on my Runner that is most noticeable when started cold and sitting at idle because of the higher idle RPMs. sitting at idle in neutral, when i disengage the clutch (press the pedal to the floor) the whine goes away. when i release the pedal and the clutch engages the whine/noise comes back. i just noticed this noise/whine yesterday (had the truck about 4-5 days), and also the whine/noise seems to get quieter when the truck warms up and the coolant temp levels off.

when driving, the whine/noise rises with RPMs and when i disengage the clutch and shift gears, the whine will still be present and hang a second or two after i have the pedal pressed all the way down while shifting, then it goes away as usual with the pedal pressed, and then it returns when i finish shifting and lift off the pedal and get back on the gas.

when i sit in neutral, the whine immediately goes away when i press the pedal, ie, there is no "hanging" of the whine so to speak.

according to the 2nd owner (who owned the car 1 year and basically let it sit) the OG owner who had the truck the prior 18 years replaced the clutch, just don't know when (just crossed the 78k mile mark yesterday).

i will say despite the whine the clutch feel is great, no slipping, and shifts are easy and smooth.

the reason i ask is because i thought typically a throw out bearing makes noise when you press the clutch pedal versus my whine/noise goes away when the clutch pedal is pressed...

still sound like a throw out bearing or maybe something else?

OP, did you ever find out what was causing the whine? I just started getting the same symptoms in my w59.

Had these exact same issues, ended up being both the pilot bearing and the input shaft bearing on the transmission at
583,000 miles for me.

@1997tacomav6 Just started having this same issue.

Reading over test you posted for step #1, dont you have to fully press the clutch to start the truck? Is it implied to let the clutch out after starting or should it stay pressed fully in?

Yup, end replacing all the parts because you have to drop the transmission and the noise is gone.

I have a whine with mine when at idle in neutral. Goes away when clutch is pressed. I inquired about it here on Tacoma World quite a while back and everyone said it's a normal noise the 4 cylinders with the manual make. I haven't worried about it and it hasn't bothered anything so far. They said it is just the sound of the input shaft spinning in there. I just ignore it.

I have been doing more research and there is a chance the fork needs a little white grease. Not sure if the noise is coming from pivot on the fork or where the fork connects to the TOB? It is a very tight location after looking it over this evening. I cant see much once the boot is off and don't want to get too much grease in there!
