Well I'm pretty sure the CG came alive in 1790. So now I'm confused.

Come on everyone lets get our history right:

Continental Navy: Est. 13 October 1775 -> U.S. Navy birthday
Department of the Navy: Est. 30 April 1798

(USCG predecessor) Revenue Cutter Service: Est. 04 August 1790 -> USCG birthday

The Navy was disbanded following the American Revolutionary war and the nation's only armed maritime presence until 1798 was the Revenue Cutter Service.

As such the USCG, predecessors included, is the oldest continuous seagoing service.

They don't, they are promoted not advanced BTW.

IIRC it's based off of time, their OER and if they are recommended. At the JO level it may not be too hard but once you reach the CDR level it gets competitive.

^^this. At the JO level where I'm at right now, it's based off time and as long as you don't do anything stupid (i.e. alcohol incidents, 8H) but as you get higher in the food chain the billets decrease and competition goes up. Had a few classmates who were passed over for LTJG for being dumb. OERs and recommendations go along way in addition to any graduate programs you are successful in.

My advice for you if you are considering the CG for your typical day to day law enforcement type stuff, enlist and go either BM or MK. ME is the Maritime Enforcement Specialist rating, however the majority of those positions are primarily giving training to the people who are DOING the law enforcement. You will get experience as a trainer, and all the administrative stuff that goes along with it, which is a great thing, however if you want to be the one standing duty and conducting LE, you're best bet is BM or MK.

Of course there are exceptions, you could be a BM scrubbing buoys, or an ME at a DOG unit, it all depends on where the chips fall. Work hard and you'll get what you want no matter what rate you choose.

Advancement is something you also want to consider, and the ME rate is pretty slow. Just my .02 cents!

    Good luck with your decision!

I think it all got hit already but to clear up one point- E's test, get marks, get awards, and get seniority points...Those all added together and revised a few million times gets your "rank" on the list for advancement.

O's are already rank ordered and listed in the Register of Officers (aka-Book of Bastards) where the Commandant is #1 and the newest ENS is # 6400 or so. When someone above you gets out or gets "passed over" (not promoted) you can move u in numbers. If you are a stellar kinda guy you can get moved around to. But for the most part- I will always promote just after the guy ahead of me.

O promotions are based more or less on time. Graduate from commissioning source and become an ENS. Year and a half later with no bone head moves-LTJG. Two and a half years from then with a clean record-LT. 5-7 years after that- LCDR. 4-5 more years- CDR. And then A mixed amount of time to CAPT. ADM is far more selective and I won't pretend that I know anything about that. You get looked at "in zone" the year before you should promote.

OERs are really the biggest indicator once "in zone". If you take a difficult job and do well or take a normal job and do something to distinguish yourself...It bodes well for getting promoted. Do things poorly or get in trouble...Not good.

And Eddie- I'm STILL laughing that you called me sir.....
