The Problem: When I try to start the truck, the engine turns over, then just dies. No sputtering or attempt to recover, just dies.

So Far: I finally got sick of throwing parts at my 1998 tacoma 3.4, so I took it to a mechanic. He went through a flow chart to diagnose the problem. The last step was to replace the ignitor. New ignitor was installed and the problem persists. My mechanic doesn't have the right "pins" to test the computer and recommended I take it to a Toyota service station.

I am still getting other data from the computer, so it doesn't seem like the whole thing is bad. Maybe I just don't understand how things work. Is it likely that the problem is wiring between the ignitor and the computer?

Is there anything else I should try on my own before I take it in?

If I end up having to get a new computer, are they plug and play, or do I have to get it programmed?

They're preprogrammed. Most of us wish they were programmable so we could tune them, but they aren't so you'll have to find one that's from a year that's compatible if you do need to swap it out.

    As for the rest... @mechanicjon

You need to start checking basics first. Check compression on all 6 cylinders. Check fuel pressure with gauge. (rentable tools from autozone) See if fuel pressure drops off before it dies or after. Check air inlet tube for cracks between throttle body and air cleaner. Check cam and crank sensors. How long does it run before it dies? Did this problem develop all of a sudden? Do you have a service manual?

Pro Tip- it's never the computer. I mean it's so rarely the computer it's not worth mentioning. They are rock freakin solid. Your mechanic is garbage. Start with basics mechanicjon said.
