Late to the conversation but those "johnny joints" as some call them really aren't sketchy at all. They can have funky road manners if you use them at both ends of the spring (Alcan will make them so the joint is in the spring eye). The reality is that they don't increase travel all that much, but they definitely help the springs from getting fatigued since it eliminates a lot of the twisting you get from flexing the suspension. So personally I would look at these more of a way to prolong spring life rather than gain a bunch of flex.

I've done a mod or two
Gotta read some builds of older pickups and crawlers, those guys go whole hog and there are some really good bits of information buried in their builds. I like to look through everything whether it's Toyota or not, gives me good ideas on new products, suspension techniques, and just how things work in general. If you ever want to be flabbergasted and most likely have to change your underwear look up cantilever suspension. The geometry of some of the more complicated and involved ones just amazes me.
I'll put my engineering boner away now. :jerkoff:

EDIT: I think I may have missed it but who makes your sliders?

I'd say roof rack. That way you can still reach into the bed from the side. And, you have that sweet roof rack that needs something mounted to it!
