I have a 2005 Tacoma V6 1GR-FE automatic w/ TRD offroad package, it has a K&N intake installed by the previous owner, has 165k miles on it.

Got codes P0355 and P0356 along with a bunch of misfire codes,
changed out coil packs for 5 and 6. More codes, new cyl #1 coil and injector, spark plugs are new and look good.

If I clear everything out (pull fuses for EFI#2, ECU B) then drive it around town its fine, take it on the highway and check engine light comes on for P0355 cyl #5 ignition coil circuit. Swapped coil from #5 to #3, clear everything again, same thing, P0355. One out of the past 5 tries I also got a P0351 code for cyl #1 coil.

Each time the freeze frame data for what triggers the code on my scan tool reads the same info:
    70mph
    about 2000 rpm
    10-13% load
    15-17% throttle position
    30.5 deg timing btdc

I've checked all the wiring to cyl #5 coil and the grounds that are shared by all the coils, they are all continuous and I highly doubt there is a break in any of the wires due to the consistence in the freeze frame data that triggers the codes. My next guesses are to check timing, compression, swap all the coil packs from bank 1 to back 2. Not sure if those are logical steps or I'm just grasping at anything at this point.

Where do I go from here??

    Please help,
    Stephanie

If the circuit is sound and you have swapped the coil packs... Check the spark plug in the effected cylinder...

:) Hi Stephanie, I have read about your troubles and I will try to help you with this. Your P0 codes, the 355,356,and 351 all are about the coils AND the secondary circuit. If you can do your own repairs, I may have some info to help track down the problem. This provides a list to check off to see what is wrong with your system. I think you may have a malfunctioning Crank sensor or camshaft sensor causing the codes and your problem. If you do what the link says to do, it should lead to a solution. If it doesn't help, we will see what else it can be. I hope this helps you. Good Luck.

    Still no luck

Did a compression test, regapped and checked all spark plugs, tested bank 1 oil control valve to the vvt, moved around the coils again, tested idle voltage for the IGF confirmation signal to the ecm from the coils, not sure if I have the correct tool to check the waveforms for the ign coil signals coming out of the ecm since the way I was testing it gave me strange readings.

So far everything I was thinking it could be is testing ok. I haven't checked the cam or crank sensors as I think if those were bad they would throw their own codes.

Have you checked your grounding wires, there is one in the back of you engine compartment going from the engine block to the frame, and on from the negative battery terminal to your frame. I had a similar problem and this fixed it.

Did you ever fix this issue? I’m having the same problem. My truck only has 90k it’s making me want to sell it and get rid of it :(
