Seriously, you should not be too scared to do this! It is EXTREMELY EASY and any good set of coil compressors (like the link autozone or advanced auto will loan you) have ways to secure the coil so it does not slip off. You are not compressing it that much, it's easy to do and there is NOTHING TO BE SCARED OF.

He thinks that the rear needs to be compressed as well?! What on earth is Pep Boys going to compress the rear shocks onto, what assembly are they compressing and charging him $40 for?

nothing, all stock expect got a OE replacement air filter K&N.
you can rent from autozone and do it yourself. but make sure you do it right and put all the bushing and washer in. when i did mine, i forgot to the washer and bushing under the mounting top plate and i hate to take it apart. when taking it apart its harder because the coil are compressed and tricky to get the two metal clamps into the coils. so make sure to do it right.

Yeah, I'm in the process of installing 5100's on my truck, too. I went to O'Reileys to rent a spring compressor. I asked for a "coil spring compressor", and didn't really look at the tool before I got it home. Yeah, it's the wrong one, I got the type of compressor for 4Runner coil springs that goes inside the spring to compress it. DOH!

I get to go back today and see if they have the right one. This time I'll ask for a mac-strut compressor!

At least the rentals are free...

I took my coil/strut assembly to a local shop and his coil compressor. He charged $20 for the uninstall/install. I made the MISTAKE only once of taking that nut off the shock, it like to took my head off. Do NOT use some jury rig device to do this.

The shop paid over $1000 for their coil compressor and felt they had a great deal. Do not think that a piece of rope or some other cheap thing is going to compress that spring SAFELY. Spend the $20.

I saw a video on you tube of a guy who replaced the front shocks on his tacoma without a compressor. He just used a floor jack to keep the tension on the coil while removing the bolts then gently released the floor jack to release the tension in the coil. Looked simple enough. Anyone try this method?
