Im looking at getting a cold air intake, i found a AFE on craigslist for cheap but it has the AFE housing but a K&N filter on it, ive read the K&N dont do anything. With cold air intakes is it the filter that matters or the housing????

If the afe is the stage 2 si (fully enclosed), and its a good deal..... Buy it and trash the K&N filter (are u POSITIVE its k&n?).

Then get the prodry s (no oil) from afe that fits that intake.

Now as for ur question on THIS APPLICATION ONLY......

The afe stage 2 si is a great intake and allows the airflow a smoother passage, keeps the air cool as stock, and removes the silencers/baffles/chambers the stocker has. This makes it louder. The stock intake design has been run with ZERO filter in it and gained ZERO HP on a dyno. So again, for THIS APPLICATION ONLY, it appears the intake is VERY important for performance because once the OEM intake was replaced with an aftermarket, the truck seen a HP gain on the dyno.

But.... The air filter is just as important for different reasons.....K&N use an oil that does coat the MAF sensor and can cause drivability problems until cleaned.
More importantly, K&N filters FLOW great, but do not FILTER worth a damn.

So.... If it is in fact a K&N filter..... Trash it.

And don't listen to the crew who hate on intakes...... They will be here too......The gains are real (just not as much as advertised on the box of course) but the proof is out there if u look

A lot of people hate the K&N's for a variety of reasons. I never had any problems with them. I used to run K&N (drop-ins) for many years on many different vehicles.

People complain they get dust past them.
    1) You gotta make sure its seated properly in whatever housing it lives in.
    2) You gotta keep them clean. The oil is what captures the dust and if the oil is dirty and overly saturated with dirt, it can't capture anymore. I cleaned my K&N's twice a year.

People complain that the oil gets on the MAF sensor. That's because they're over-oiled. When you clean a K&N, it has to be completely dried before applying the oil. Doesn't take much oil - a quick one-pass spray over the filter and the oil 'wicks' into the filter. While cleaning the K&N, I always had an OEM paper filter to put in the truck while the K&N dried overnight and was oiled the next day.

Currently, I'm running an AFE. I changed to AFE just to try something different and go oil-less. I don't believe the AFE allows for as much airflow as the K&N does. And - I only clean the AFE once a year. Just my experiences....

I run OEM. Yes I suppose I'm one of those people.

I used to run K&N in all my vehicles but in all honesty there really is no benefit other than not having to buy a new filter. I've never used AFE so I have no experience with them but I can't imagine the gains are worth the price unless you want to hear the air entering your truck or have a S/C installed. Your truck essentially has a CAI in place from the factory so the benefits will be negligible at best.

I'm not knocking AFE or K&N in any way I just would rather spend my money elsewhere.

It is the magnum stage 2 but not fully enclosed, the guy sais he has 80k on it and wants 200$ for it, and the filter is the k&n because it's the maroon color instead of the blue that normally come on afe, thank you for the reply, would you suggest just buying a new one

I'd say do not buy this hot air intake...... Get a new intake.

Check out xru for actual dyno proof that intakes work, instead of my word or the nay sayers. Its out there, ppl just don't wanna look or pay for a dyno run.

I've also seen k&n ship air filters dripping wet.... The have also said something to the effect of not to clean them too often because the fine layer of dirt/dust helps it filter.

That's like saying to throw sand in ur oil to help the oil filter "scrub" the oil clean.

An air filter should work out of the box.... Send off an oil analysis for fun if ya run one.

Don't use the k&n filter. There's too many horror stories out there for it to be false information. If you buy it, get the AFE filter. I have the same set up and I love it. you can find that exact CAI online for a little bit more than $200 and it will already have the AFE filter. That's the route i would go.
