Well technically, you wouldn't be able to over oil a paper filter

Just guys I ran with back in Washington off the old WATTORA forums before they shut it down. 2-3 guys that were new to off-roading had them and we ran quite a few dusty trails and within a year or two they developed problems. After pulling the engines and replacing them they tore down their old engines and found scoring in the cylinder walls.

I've heard about people over oiling their filters. Maybe it has to do with the area and terrain their driving on? We don't have much dust here in PA. I have friends that are certified techs that run K&Ns with no issues.
Maybe that's the cause if they're always out stirring up dust. Would also make sense that if they do clean their filters themselves because of all the dust, they are over oiling them.

You can absolutely over oil a K&N filter. You can also run the engine too quickly after oiling which is common because people don't know how to read instructions. Not to mention common sense is not common, sadly.

@Aussiek2000 I forgot to mention, but I know they also make filter covers (as dumb as that sounds) to cover up the outside of the K&N filter and perhaps make it more resistant to dust? I've never used one. Maybe you're familiar with them?

    Edit: Here's a link http://www.knfilters.com/search/wrap.aspx

Seems this is specifically used for filters that are exposed to especially dusty environments.

Over oiled filters usually end up with fouling on the MAF sensor which causes either a lean condition or rich condition on the engine which ultimately leads to long term issues with the engine.

Just read the instructions and pay attention when you're servicing your filter and you should be golden

If an independent dyno shows 2 or 5 or 15 hp great.

I drive and sometimes race my fairly warmed over 360 in my Challenger at Bandimere a mile up and can verify the loss of HP with thin air at this altitude. The guy planning on doing the dyno test is at my altitude. That's why I warned that comparing a head to head dyno run at this altitude will likely show less gain than at sea level.

But some here say if you don't own a 3rd Gen, shut up, as though physics changed in 2016.

I just don't see why anyone would spend the money to dyno a mid-size truck that could gain 5hp max haha. You want an independent dyno so that's what you're relying on. This isn't a sports car forum, it's going to be hard to find a guy that wants to pony up money for something stupid like this.

You're right, you will make less power at higher elevations. Your truck will also make less power in stock form though so the base line pull is also skewed. I have to assume not every dyno pull comparison video is done at sea level. Truth is, anyone that believes the 17 HP gain BS should buy my bridge, i'll sell it real cheap. Anyone with half a brain knows the increase will not be significant, but it will be something and they do generally sound good while doing it.

That's what I consider expecting a lot from an average consumer vice enthusiast.

Then they get what they deserve. If you're too stupid to properly clean and oil a filter, you probably shouldn't be allowed to operate the vehicle said filter came out of.

This would eliminate 75% of drivers on the road

Ultimately it comes down to Toyota has designed the engine around the stock intake and exhaust. It's a naturally aspirated engine which means there's going to be "pulses" in the intake and exhaust system. Adding an intake to the system without tuning the engine is going to disrupt the design of the system. Changing the parameters of on part of they designed system will result in a change in another. I'm going to guess and say that changing the intake is resulting in a more rich environment for the engine which is why people are seeing the HP and torque gains.

Here in MD, that would be a good thing. I've traveled quite a bit, MD drivers are some of the worst in the country.

It's just O2 level isn't it? Correct me if I'm wrong but the ECU is more than capable for adjusting to the new level of intake. If you take a truck straight out of Louisiana at sea level and drop it in the mountains of Colorado it'll adjust to compensate for the change in O2
