Cold air intake

They must have gone up quite a bit. I put one one my Titan in 2010 and it was right
around $500 bucks. For over $700, I'd just swap out the muffler, our is exhaust seems pretty
good otherwise and that price makes it look even better!

What is the charcoal filter you mentioned? Can that be removed?

I expect better sound with the dry filter + the deck plate mod I've
already done - you can hear the difference in sound just from that deck
plate hole in there now.

 

I'm thinking that too the more I look at prices. A good muffler shop will have no problem running new pipe if you want for cheaper than a cat back.

 

That's my thought, can't imagine it would be more than $150. Going to call them
soon and see what they have in stock or can get.

Nice. With my dry flow filter coming, having that would pretty much make it an
after market CAI for quite a bit less spending. I don't see one for our truck though.

Yep. That's what it is. Because the box is already pulling cold air. The stock tube has small silencing buffles on it to quiet the intake which also makes the incoming air not have a clear path to the engine. The modular intake tube fixes that minor issue and gives you that powerful intake sound at higher rpms

 

The 3rd gen has the filter too. I researched into it and from what I can tell made no difference on 2nd gen if you removed it. And it helped a bit on the Tundra if you removed it. Haven't heard anything about 3rd gen.

Plus you keep the cold air function. After marker "cold air intakes" just pull hot air unless you're at highway speeds.

 

Herniater! Nice post man, that's exactly what I'm referring to! I didn't see a way
to "test" remove it without cutting it off and having no way to put it back.

I tried that same thing on my 2011 Sport and agree, it did nothing for me sound
or anything else wise.

I take it there's no way to remove those for a clearer path for the air? There is a cloth mesh on the
new truck attached to the part of the air box that you lift off to replace the filter, doubt that would do
much though either way.

Probably is a way to remove the silencer baffles. I know there is write up on how to do it for 1st gens. IMHO it was easier to for over the 60 bucks for the modular intake tube from airaid. But again I'm in a first gen, so my available options may vary from yours, but the facts remain. For example, first gens have no charcoal filter

 

Kinda what I'm thinking, might as well go with the tube, nothing out there yet though.

It looks like removing that mesh would help, I didn't remember it looking that constricting
and densely woven when I did the deck-plate mod a month ago.

 

i havent looked under the hood of a 3rd gen.. but a 2nd gen already comes stock with cold air.. it pulls air from the fenderwell (which is cold air) so i would say if they kept that design-ish.. you should have a cold air.. change out to a prodry filter of your choosing and stick with that.. I think the only cold air i have seen that actually has proven numbers was the URD and runs a tube and filter to front of the radiator behind the grill...

 

They kept the cold air intake on the 3rd gen as well.

 

Very much the same, I just don't recall the heavy mesh on the upper portion on
my 2011 - might have just forgotten, went with a Volant CAI on that truck and really liked it.

That's what we need!! Plenty of room for it, I can fit a suit case behind that front grille.

That being the case, give URD some time to develop and I'd put money down 10 to 1 that @Gadget has plans to offer a URD True CIA for 3rd Gen eventually. Hell he may be working on a Rotrex supercharger kit for it as well

I'm sure they will come through with something... not soon enough though so in the
interim, I'll see what I can keep cutting out of there.

So....what's that thick mesh screen doing, is it just a backup for the air filter,
or just to reduce noise a bit?
