Well AFE package arrived today. Ran to the garage and about 45 minutes later it was installed and off to test drive. Ran it up the main road and back quick just to test and here's my thoughts:
    - installation is pretty straight forward, if you've done this before or are mechanically inclined then should be less than a hour with minimal tools.
    - no help on the low end, but feels a little better in the mid & high range
    - be prepared for the noise! It's noticeable under 2k but not loud, 2k to 4K okay starting to get loud but manageable as I'm never in the 3-4 range very long, but 4K to 6k (especially 5-6k) holy shit I've heard 1990s diesels that are less noisy than this little motor/intake
    - the rubber grommet that plugs the forward facing hole of the air box is junk, it fits but loosely. It needs to be sealed to the box, I'm going to find a silicone or adhesive to mate the grommet to the box. On my second WOT that grommet grenaded out of my car and shot down the road like a hockey puck on a slap shot.

In all honesty I can't give a real opinion of the I take just yet as the test drive was only minutes long with 2 WOT and a trip to recover the grommet from traffic. I will update once I've had a little wheel time now that it's installed

Just installed my K&N and drove around for about 20 miles. It makes a real nice sound when the engine is under load. Just driving about it's barely noticeable until you step on it. I like it. $200 well spent!

I wonder if there's ever going to be an option that just stuffs more air into the stock air box... Like a big aftermarket scoop but without losing the OE filter.

Yeah, probably not. Snorkel is probably the most likely thing, but would look odd for a guy with a prerunner.

You'd be shocked at how much of a difference just stuffing more air and/or cooler air into a stock airbox makes, though. Many cars out there benefit from just a little "snout" mod, as the box itself is usually not a restriction to flow.

Well yeah, that's where the real power is at. Also where the real money, labor, and warranty voiding is too! :headbang: If I wanted much more power out of my 2TR that's pretty much where I would have to go.

Lower IATs might not make for massive power gains, but they certainly couldn't hurt anything as long as they're not about to suck in water.

I trap the same speed/ET regardless if I'm at 60* IAT or 120.

+1 stuffing implies force, even a snorkel doesn't impart positive force with its tortured path.

I received my AFE CAI, simple install, no biggie. The response is good and the sound is good as well, seeing this is my FIRST CAI. I'm liking it very much, the grommet (hockey puck..lol) is loose, I taped it up with electrical tape for now and it is holding. will apply adhesive to it later. Overall I'm satisfied with the CAI. The TACO sounds great !! IMO :burnrubber::mudding:

Okay so when I had posted this the grommet was out because I had not had a chance to seal it and let it sit. There is a noticeable difference with the grommet installed and driving with it out. Its quieter now that i've sealed it into the box, but its still louder than any intake I've had before. This is my first taco but i've had intakes on my silverado's, my raptor, even my tunned WRX intake wasnt this loud. I would really like to drive one with the K&N intake for comparison.

Just wondering if anybody has gotten the optional scoop that goes on the AFE intake wear that cap keeps coming loose on everybody? And I think it's pretty poor engineering on their part that the cap is an issue, It shouldn't be an issue.

Thought about it but not sold on the design. I think that driving down the highway with a good rain that scoop becomes a funnel to pour water right into the intake.
