It's a charcoal filter. Once you turn off your engine. Any fumes that exit the engine will get trapped in the filter then sucked back into the engine when you start the vehicle.
Helps with emissions and having a gas smell in your garage. Some people remove it. But from what I have heard it doesn't make any or just a little difference except for some additional noise, on the 2nd generation. I haven't heard of anyone trying on the 3rd gen yet.

Ah-hah! thanks!! Removing tonight or tomorrow then, a little extra growl is just
what I'm after and I only park in the driveway so no worries on the smell.

Deck-Plate mod took care of the baffles/fender obstructions for me
    so I won't bother with that...any thoughts?
My AFE dry flow will be in next week, $70 bucks on Amazon.

completely agree with you. Just in the driveway I couldn't really hear much difference
with the charcoal filter removed while I was revving the engine. The tube itself looks
obstruction free as far as I could see into it which was pretty far.

What is the "silencers inside the fender" you mentioned? I thought the 90 degree
pipe off the intake just led out the side, is there something else out there?

You said, "the tube between the airbox and throttle body" - Are you talking
about getting the air raid tube?

K&N probably has one out. I don't see them passing up an opportunity to pocket some money with some false performance numbers.

Man are you trained by Toyota or something? You really are a wealth of knowledge. I wasn't even going to ask I was just going to go purchase a 63 series for the 2nd Gen 4.0. So glad I read this thread.

Yeah, as soon as you see "up to" you can be sure, it's going
to do very little if anything.

KVA.........K&N tube, Volant box w/clear lid, aFe Dry Flo S filter.

    1) Looks better, less clutter under the hood
    2) Washable non-oiled filter
    3) Breathes thru fenderwell like oem
    4) Sound
    5) Same MPG, same HP (by itself)

Also it works with the LCE header, Gibson catback & Tooter IM spacer for noticeable gain in driveability fun. The gap around box hole and tube has been sealed from inside the box with rolled up pipe insulation squeezed between back of filter and inside of box.

The Volant tube didn't have all the mountings for all the doodads like the K&N tube did and it was connected directly to the box/filter where the flex was all in the rubber fitting on TB. The K&N has mounts for everything the oem did and has bracket to hold up tube leaving the whole thing free to move with the motor.

This pic is of the gap between tube and box being filled from inside the box showing how it can move with motor before hitting on box, K&N advertising removed & ADP installed.......

I feel like the overall power is adequate what I really want is quicker throttle response.

K&N lists same part number between the trucks, so all 5.7 tundra filters should fit the taco

FWIW, I had my charcoal filter off when I still had oem intake and park in garage and I never ever smelled any gas smell.
