You dont need power to cruise. Nobody puts more power into their truck to cruise at 65. People need power when accelerating. These third gens go into 4k quite often when accelerating - ie all the time.

a cold air intake will not increase power on any Tacoma truck, since the truck comes with one from the factory already(sucks cool air from the fender well) but im really interested to see the dyno results from the OP when its done anyways to really gauge what if any performance is gained. only real way to find out

I'm not questioning that part, just your previous statements. If someone added power only above 4k rpm, it would still be useful

    Oh boy. Read carefully, ok?

I'm not talking about cold air intakes. I dont care about those.

You stated no toyota truck sees 4k rpm so putting power there is fruitless.

I stated this is incorrect. These third gens see 4k rpm all the time. Ya dig?

    independent test on filters alone.

    http://nicoclub.com/archives/kn-vs-oem-filter.html

while k$n can boast their filters flow more cfm they do it at the expense of letting 14x more shit through and plugging up way faster.

one other thing to consider. when people dump their trucks with oem vs aftermarket are they dynoing a fresh paper filter to compare against the fresh oiled

3rd gens make all their power inthe higher RPMs... lol. That's why everyone complains about the "lack of power"... because it doesn't come on where people typically think a truck's power should come on.

    Exactly!

This thing has enough power unless you want a drag truck.
What we need is called LOW END TORQUE.
A CAI is not going to give us any Torque
Usually we can get it on the exhaust side (long tubes).
But having the exhaust manifolds cast into the heads will prevent that.
We even have pre crushed pipes factory installed
No need to hit a rock to crush it

    Options per $

    1- OVtune - 20-30 lb/ ft
    2- Gears (torque multiplier)
    3 - a combination of 1 and 2 ( probably my choice )
    3- PD (forced induction) - 100+ lb/ft

You can throw all the air you want into the engine. It isn't going to drastically change the power or torque. There are so many variables that effect engine performance. Put bigger nozzles on your injectors and tell me whether or not you get more power. You can only do so much of one thing until you have to start tweaking 800 other things to make it effective.

Correct. The intake is only one part of a system. The more air you draw in means the more air you have to push out so with out a performance exhaust your cai is really pointless. And what k&n fails to mention is that to gain the higher air flow their filters have a larger micron rating which means that they do not catch as many particulates such as dust and other things that are harmful to your engine.

Tell that to my turbo. It makes gobs of power even on stock exhaust. Larger injectors, fuel pump and tuning. That's three things, not 800.

yes but are you pulling heavy loads uphill on a constant basis,or are driving at near redline RPMs the majority of the time ? my point is that the OP said that a CAI shows its most gains at the 4000RPM range, my counter point is how often are you driving at a 4000rpm range not often enough to warrant a clear win when using a CAI in a Tacoma. read this if u haven't already>http://ricksfreeautorepairadvice.com/more-power-with-a-cold-air-intake/

    All the things!
I bought the TRD Pro intake and it's arriving this coming Friday. Anyone in the greater Seattle area have a shop with a dyno and want to do a before and after run? I have no other performance mods on my truck.

BTW, I'm not installing for power or noise. I just want something to do on my truck and don't mind the under hood bling. Also contributes to my TRD Bro build.

Let me know if you want to settle this pointless debate.

Did your vehicle come with a turbo? Did you select the turbo yourself? There's a good amount of variables that just go into turbo selection. The tuning probably changes at least 20 things.

Has nobody tagged @chris4x4. He did dyno testing on this issue years ago, that’s where the general consensus came from that they are a giant waste of money.

    Subbed for the dyno results.

I just like the sound. Put a k&n on a 2k grand Cherokee v8 with a flowmaster, and an Injen on a 4 cyl Honda element. Injen pulls from behind the fog light and is a pain to access for removal. Sounds great with the injen exhaust too.

I'd rather hear the motor than the tires or wind. I'll probably go with the AFE, not set on the exhaust though.
