Since the mornings are getting colder my 03 starts and goes up to 1500/ 1700 rpms for a good amount of time. It takes around 6/ 7 minutes for it to come down to 1000/1200. Trouble is when I try to leave and put it in drive, even with my foot on the brake it really hits the trans hard. I have not had this Taco long and still getting used to it. Is this common among the 3.4 ? Thanks for any help.

Mine does that as well. Pretty common actually. They say you could clean the tps and maf or replace them to get it to idle normal.

Under the throttle body there is an Idle Air Control valve (IAC). The IAC has 2 components an electrical and a thermal. Water from the thermostat bypass hose flows into one side of the valve and out of the other. See if the lines are actually hooked up and if coolant flows. The electrical component of the IAC has a 3 pin connector. The middle pin of the connector should have battery voltage. The other 2 lead back to the PCM so leave them alone. Apply +12v to the middle pin of the IAC valve, not the harness, and ground the top or bottom pin and the valve should move to either open or closed, depending on which pin you ground. As the engine warms the coolant from the lines should help with closing the IAC valve. It sounds as if you have a defective IAC valve.
Being Captain Obvious here... dropping it into gear with elevated RPMS isn't doing your trans or drivetrain any favors.

This is with a new IAC from Toyota in my case

Depending just how cold 5 or more minutes is not unusual.

The colder it is around 0 degrees F mine will stay on high idle as long as 10 minutes

Then I like a nice warm cab other wise I need to drive with the windows down to not freeze my breathe on the windshield

Thanks for the info, looking into it now. Wyoming09 it does take about 4/5 min for the idle to come down to 1000.
