FWIW, mine’s been doing the same thing since I’ve owned it, and I haven’t had any noticeable problems. It comes and goes more often in the winter, but it’s nothing to lose any sleep over

We have a very noisy valvetrain and noisy injectors. I've owned many FI vehicles and have never had the kind of noisy injectors that I have on my Toyota 4.0's. You get used to it.

I just had my oil changed a few weeks ago, and the loud ticking persists. Just re-confirming that it’s normal (for anyone who finds this thread via Google).

Well, with most of Toyota’s engineering - perhaps “normal” but not right.
Mine just developed a cold engine tick around 38k. But i know toyota will just blame the injectors, so what’s the point?

Mine makes a crunch noise when you start it, like a pretty noticeable one. It does it maybe one out of 5 cold starts. Sounds like someone had a wrench on something but it flies out at cold start only. I have tried to see what it was but it never does it when I'm in front of the truck, only when I am in the cabin.

Just bought my 2014 4.0 w/ 16k miles. Cold engine start producing a lower engine area slight tick/clunk, after warm up it goes away. It’s not the upper valve train. Hopefully not a bearing. Changing out the engine oil soon, will see if it persists. Hopefully it’s a normal 2nd gen. Taco thing.
