Hello, long time lurker of TW. I have a 2005 tacoma 2.7L that has a high idle at cold start. It will rev up to 2300rpms. Half the time, it will jump down to 1800 and then spike right back up to 2300. It sounds awful. During the next few minutes the idle slowly goes down to normal around 800rpms.

I have cleaned the throttle body and replaced the gasket and cleaned my MAF. Any other ideas? This has been an issue for years.

Unplug the maf and see if the idle somewhat normalizes

Pretty normal for a fuel injected engine to idle high when it's cold, it's a warmup strategy but 2300 seems a bit high. Typically 1800-2000 is about normal on initial start and then they settle down to around 1200-1500 pretty quick.

Do you have a check engine light on? If so what code(s) do you have?

I do not have a check engine light on. It’s the rapid skip/jump when it’s high and jumps to 1800 then back up to the 2000s.

I tried to start the truck with the MAF unplugged but the truck would not start.
