If you're really worried about it, give the closet Toyota dealership where he will be a call and ask their service manager. Get their address and phone number as well as a couple of auto parts stores in the area. Give the addresses and phone numbers to him just in case he needs their help. Battery age and condition will impact him a lot more than available CCAs. I'd be more worried about the snow rating of the tires. Make sure he has a proper set of tools (nothing fancy). Honestly, I would schedule a pop/son work on the car day and make him do the following:
    • Replace the battery (more like remove the posts, clean them, and reconnect them. Feel free to make him take the battery out and put in back in if you want) by himself.
    • Change a tire (jack the truck up, remove the tire, put it back on, lower the truck back down) by himself. Maybe even install/remove tire chains since I believe CO has tire chain laws.
    • Jump start a car. No need to actually jump start. Just learn how to put the cables on (this is the make him do it so he learns it) by himself.
    • Check oil and how to add if needed by himself.
And, frankly, if I had a daughter, I'd schedule a pop/daughter work on the car day and make her do this too. By herself. I wouldn't want my daughter stuck somewhere because she doesn't know how to change a tire or jump start a car.

But one thing he can do that will help is once week, take the truck for a good, highway speed (55 or faster) 30 mile drive. It will do wonders for the truck like put a good charge on the battery and exercise the mechanicals. I'd even tell him to find a dirt road (say 5 to 10 miles long) and take it once a month to that road and put it into 4WD. Give the front diff and the transfer case some exercise. Just don't forget to take it out of 4WD before he gets back on the asphalt and avoid sharp turns in 4WD mode. They don't call it part-time 4WD for nothing.

:crapstorm: Now excuse me while I grab my shield.

Yes mine is a tow package I thought the TDR's were too. I can't imagine they would have made different trays though guessing a 27 would fit.

    They did ...

    It won't.

    :( :notsure:

    Edited to add:
You can order/purchase the Battery Tray for a 2015 OR, and then you can put a 27 in your truck on that tray.

I bought the tray but don’t think it’s absolutely necessary (it may have slight overhand) and planned on getting a 27 agm. But after some hard thinking and my use, I didn’t want the extra 10lbs so stuck with 24 size

I have the tow package also

Seems like experience varies greatly from one person to the next. I also have a 2020. Rough start yesterday morning so I’m considering getting a new battery too already. It’s been about a year since this post so I figured I’d ask how you made out?

My taco 2021 started with no issues on the stock battery yesterday it was - 30 here in Canada. I had just changed the oil 2 weeks ago so that would help.

I just updated my battery from the factory unit pre-emptively. Since I have a winch I wanted something that could cycle deeper.

I didn’t want to mess with AGM voltage boosting, so that was out. The next best option was a 24f Duralast “Enhanced Flooded Battery” (EFB) from Autozone. These supposedly are designed to take more abuse for start-stop applications. They claim better sealing, better vibration resistance, and can cycle deeper without damage. They’re expensive but it seemed to fit the bill for my needs.

No need to revive a year old thread. His son moved to Colorado and all is well.

I had a deka back in my tundra when I use to go snowmobiling in northern Quebec. The temps would drop to -40 some mornings in the winter. Never had a problem starting that truck after it sat idle a week in that cold. When I sold the truck years later that deka battery was still in it at 10 years old working fine.
