Finally wiggled my "clicking" starter out through the wheelwell on my 99 taco and figured I'd replace the whole unit instead of the contacts since I'll be RVing with it this year. I see there is a "cold weather" version. What is the difference over the standard starter?

It's less Tacoma and more mod
I've never heard of a cold weather starter, but most will tell you that the best starter unit to buy is the OEM one as many have had 3rd party replacements die shortly after purchase.

A higher KV rating,,or horsepower rating. Easier to turn over the motor.

I had 3 choices at Baxters in Longview when I replaced mine in 2011. Bought the highest rated one they had at that time (1.9hp rated). Had the quality control dyno/test sheet in the box and it actually exceeded 1.9hp.

    The 3 at that time was a 1.3, a 1.7 and a 1.9

    Thanks Mod.

CR NAPA has their "NAPA Power Supreme" reman denso's (1.4kw) for $114, both std and cold. A brand new Bosch 1.9 kw is pushing $300. I'll check Baxters.

    Tanks again!

Crapola! now $300?. Uhh, I paid somewere south of $175ish for mine,,just 3 years ago. Should have bought a pallet of em.

Tell em to price beat on the better starter. It's a bugger to replace.

I never heard of the "Cold Weather" starter either, and I've owned many cars and trucks in my 60+ years. Today I found a document from Toyota that has some pretty good basic starter info. It mentions the cold weather package indicating the CWP starters have greater power, usually up to .5 Kw over the non CWP.
    see: WWW.autoshop101.com/forms/h7.pdf

FYI: NAPA lists a new Bosch starter @ $344 bucks. My oh my!

I purchased the cold weather version of an AC Delco replacement starter for my 98 and burned it out within a few days.
Apparently trucks that are built to live in colder areas can come equipped with an upgraded starter but you cant just put it on your truck if it never came with it.

I bought new Denso Cold Weather starter for 145 in Chehalis. Bolted right in after 30 minutes of wiggling/twisting and cussin. No issues. Same size as the OEM I took out. everything appeared to be the same. I also found the starter listed as "Cold Region" starters. Maybe they put them in rigs headed to the north? I dunno.

Now I found the right valve cover weeping a little oil.......

Thanks for the input guys, it helps!

I think your autoshop101 link told the tale Joe. The higher output starters for overseas/exported/imported diesels in the severe cold,,which would make sense. Also to cover other applications, ect, ect.

Check to make sure the bolts on the cover are not loose. Mine's doing the same but I am going to tighten them back to spec first to see if it goes away.

The cold weather starter is part of an optional "All Weather Guard Equip Package" code "CK", $75 (in 99). The package included "heavy-duty battery, heavy-duty starter, rain-channel windshield molding and heavy duty windshield wiper motor".
It was a stand alone option commonly bundled with the "SR5", "TRD" and "LTD" packages.

    XHD wiper motor.

All Pac Northwest trucks should have had that,,for the XHD rain we get.

Who got the cheap wiper motor?,,

    hmm.

Thanks for that info, Dirty Pool. Those hard to find facts interest me. They should have thrown in some XHD wiper blades. I use a couple sets a year in the PNW. Took a trip to Moab last year. Outfreekingstanding!!!
