Wow! That is pretty solid too! Since I have 3 driveshafts now, one of my friends is going to build one out of some solid square tube for me and I'll just swap it in for wheeling. Then maybe when I get a crawlbox I will have some solid ones made by a company.

i would just run a really thick walled standard tube driveshaft over a square. not only are they easier to balance, but imagine you get the DS hung up on a rock. you can get off/over it under your own power, but the driveshaft will spin against the rock a little. a tubular shaft will slide against the rock, but a square shaft will hammer against that rock 4 times with each rotation. even if that doesn't harm the shaft, it's going to be hell on your u-joints, carrier bearing, and pinion seal.

Also stopped by that little DIY shop after work to check the place out. obviously not as tidy as a professional shop, but the lifts looked brand new. got to talk to the owner, who is a very nice gentleman. looking forward to hanging out there for a couple hours saturday morning.

Well the pinion seal part will suck, but since it will be a wheeling drive shaft the rest won't matter. We are going with square tube since it will be easy for him to put together in "his yard" basically. He has a shop and such, but he's not exactly a drive shaft specialist so this is just something simple and cheap to throw together that can take some abuse. He said he prefers the square ones as well because when you get hung up on them it can rotate and not be touching. That pounding might also move the rock in the way, at least around here. haha. Lots of fragile lava rock.

When I get a crawlbox, I will just go talk to Tom Woods and have him build me a couple good ones since I live so close to him.

that volcanic rock may be your saving grace. just be careful with it if you head east to CO or UT, or even the east coat. bouncing a square shaft on the denser rocks will tear things up under your truck. also be careful going fast with it if it's not professionally balanced.

Yeah, I don't usually drive too fast through the rocks. I'd rip my front end out from under me. haha

The lava rocks can be my saving grace when it comes to getting stuck on them. Just back up and hit it harder and they usually break, but they are sure nasty on tires... Way too sharp...

We'll see how this turns out anyway. I don't think he has even started on it yet. He has been working on his tow rig so he can SAC his Taco. haha

Square driveshafts are usually made for the front post-sas. The front doesn't turn when not in 4wd so it doesn't need to be balanced unless your gonna run high speeds in 4wd.

Also it allows a driveshaft to be made cheaply as they just source two pieces of square tube that fit in each other. They can then add as much slip as they need without buying expensive driveshaft parts.

most likely at some point......just don't know when. i'm in kansas at least through october 3rd at the moment. some time before then i'll know whether i'm staying here longer, headed back to houston, or being shipped off somewhere else completely different.
