    IMO........ KISS

Gravity works fine boat tanks and they come with a primer bulb. I see no need for filters and electric pumps but I have grown up on boats not a truck so... I could be missing something.

A good ground for filling it up would be important.

The pump will be gravity fed, not a pickup type pump in the tank, so that will be pretty simple. There will also need to be a low point for the fuel outlet.

Colin also wants to hit a switch and transfer the fuel so some sort of electric cutoff will have to be used, or the fuel pump could serve that purpose. Will the pump be able to hold back the fuel?

thaose are actually nicely priced. full blown steel fuel cells go for that much just for the shell, an you still need all of the other stuff to actually have it work.

Kiss indeed. however, to prevent sloshing, i want the tank to either be 100% full, or 100% empty. essentially drive until the empty light comes on, then flip a switch for a few minutes, and then you're all filled up again. i don't want to be dealing with fuel foam, baffles, etc.

I was actually thinking about using a pickup pump. that was there is no need to rely on the pump being able to hold back fuel. 12v self-priming diesel/oil/gasoline transfer pumps are pretty easy to find, and have some pretty good flow rates.

hardest part of this is probably going to be finding the best place to tie into the existing tank/filler system. needs to be secure, leak free, and not cause the code to be thrown that you get when your gas cap isn't tight.

Just tie into the existing filler neck anywhere and use a check valve in the line to the aux tank.

I would never be concerned with that. Way to overly complicated.

As Colin said below...trucks empty so all you need to do is, screw on manual primer bulb to full aux tank, insert end into existing exterior fuel door, couple prime pumps, and all filled up.

If you really want a emergency shut off just use a:

I get it, but for something you'll only need should you plan poorly or in an emergency it's way to complicated IMHO. I know you guys like to go all out, but this is a simple project that needs to remain foolproof so KISS applies even more.

Shit like this makes me LMAO:

it's complicated, expensive, not even close to reliable as a gravity fed system and dangerous IMHO.

In the end all this guy needed was:

Wow, they put a transfer pump on a roof mounted tank? Good grief.

Colin, and myself, do tend to go overboard on things like this. :)

My tank will be mounted just above the frame rails so there should be enough differential drop to drain the auxiliary tank into the main tank with gravity alone. My issue will be accessing the valve to start the transfer as it will be behind sheet metal. Maybe an electronic globe valve would be in order. Flip a switch, let the fuel gravity feed into the stock filler neck, and be done. Just have to see how the bed and tank lays out before I decide if I need a pump or not.

having never taken the factory filler neck out, how would you tie into it if it were your project? thread a fiting in, and properly seal the threads?

not as reliable doesn't mean unreliable. if a pump were to fail, there's no reason i couldn't siphon transfer the fuel as a backup. what do you see that's more dangerous about it than the factory system assuming everything is tied together properly, and fused/grounded adaquately?

when can i see the new candy sitting in your garage?!?! Sorry for not replying to the picture you sent me. last two weeks have been insane :bananadead:

the fact that there is a tank permanately mounted on the roof is pretty terrible, regardless of the pump. talk about COG issues.

Hah, that spare tire one is cool. not so great for off road, but an awesome idea for a street only truck/SUV. cool stuff on their site.

I have a question on the fake bolts in place of the fenders? What size bolt did you use through the holes.

This is my set up right now. But I might just jump up to one larger boat tank

It is this that I added some more hose for length

I might take just a bit out of the hose length tho. But it does give me plenty of reach from the far side of my rack to the filler neck. Won't have to move the tanks around just take the camp off and stick in the pick up tube. A couple pumps on the handle and fuel starts to flow at a really good rate

off the top of my head......not a clue.

I can check though. I doubt it was much larger than 1/4'' diameter. length will depend on what washer setup you use.

where do you keep the cans when you aren't fueling up? i'm trying to keep the COG low., so i'd rather not keep the cans up on the roof, or have to lift them there when I need to fill.

also would like to be able to transfer the fuel into the factory tank on the fly. because i'm lazy

I do like that handle though. could toss some fuel in the trailer when it undergoes the next overhaul, and run a pump through that handle :drevil:

I just leave them up there, ya it adds a little extra weight up there but 16 gal off fuel doesn't really weigh that much really. And the pumping the handle acts like a siphon I guess it would work if you added a pump into the system. Then u wouldn't really have to pump the handle to get the flow started.
