started a new project. getting rid of the old bed rack and building a bigger, more versitile one that will fit my needs a little better and allow me to fun a tool box.

made some good progress, but ran out of steel, so it's off to the steel yard again tomorrow

here's what i've got so far:

gotta design it before you build it
    [IMG]

got the tool box into position and built the headache rack portion
    [IMG]

got the main tubes bent and test fit the bike to make sure it sits right. i have two fork mounts on order through my shop.

spare tire's going to put a lot of weight on the rear of the rack, so an extra leg was in order to spread out the load. (only one side is on in these and it's only tacked in place)

hopefully my steel supplier has what i need in stock, or it'll be about a week before i get to work on it more.

main things i have left is to make the swing out spare tire holder and make the mounts that will anchor the entire rack to the bed bolts. then the little stuff after that is figuring out how/where to mount the shovel, ax, hi-lift, etc.

    Thanks Connor

a lot of welding shops can order steel or have enough on hand that they will sell it to you at a good price. never ever ever ever buy steel from home depot, lowes, northern tool, tractor supply, etc unless it's something small and for convenience. they have absurdly high prices.

you get to practice any more on the new welder this weekend?

thanks, it frees up a ton of space in the bed over what i had. the spare tire will pivot up out of the way, essentially giving you the room you'd have with a bed cap, minus the space the tool box takes up.

couldn't figure out where the hell i was rubbing on the last wheeling trip. funally located the problem when i crawled under the truck yesterday. gues this is an issue you have to look out for, running 295s instead of 285. probably gonna take the truck into the alignment shop and have them play around with the caster to try to keep it from rubbing like this, since i really don't feel like chopping out and re-plating that part of the frame right now.

got the same rub on both sides

    Nice rack! :D

I have rubbage in about the same spot, maybe a little bit forward of there but it's not bad.

    thanks fellas!

dang, i thought you only had issues with the UCAs. i think i should be able to iliminate this with a caster adjustment, but if not, it's not a bad rub.

got a little work done on the new bed rack today. the spare tire will slightly change position and angle on the final product. i just tossed it up there for the pictures, even though the tire swing out (up actually) isn't done.

left to do: finish carrier, anchor it to the bed bolts so it's not being supported by the bed rails, and add all of the accessory mounts (bike, hi lift, shovel, ax, etc.). then, lastly, bedline the whole damn thing.

had some more time to work on the rack again today. all i have left to do now is make the legs that secure it to the bed bolts, add all of the mounts for the hi-lift, shovel, etc, and then bedline it.

poor 14'' blade was no longer large enough to make a 45* cut

    Thanks guys!

Thanks Coby. eventually i'll also build some arms that allow me to swing the tire carrier up to the horizontal position and hold it there for when i need some extra bed space.

Overland Off-road is indeed the company. it'll actually be ayear old in 4 months. time flies! Unfortunately i really can't build a ton for people from september through april because of full time classes and a part time job, but come summer time, i'll be building to my heart's content. already have a few people waiting for the summer months so i can work on some items for them.
