Sadly my grille did not make it through the winter to get some chip guard added to it. I don't think it would have helped anyway.

A rock hit my grill and took a chip out. Soon as I hit the grill with hose water it spread and a minute later I shot about 80% of the green off the grille. It looked beautiful and came out awesome but it didn't adhere very good on the chrome.

Next step will be to strip the chrome and scuff the plastic. Gives me a good reason to buy more body colored paint and paint the rear chrome bumper too!

I did the same process as you but used the plastic adheasion promoter then went with regular primer. hopefully that sticks but I will paint again, don't like how it turned out for me

I'm trying this on my Corolla now, and I bought some "automobile primer" in a spray can, painted that on (about 3 coats) and let it dry.

Now as I paint my layers on and try to wipe off dust between paint layers, the paint and primer BOTH just slip off the painted chrome!!!

Did I do something wrong? Is there some other primer I can buy that will for sure adhere?

Hello. This is my first post on TW. I'm currently looking for a new 2nd gen Tacoma.

I'm a automotive painter for major insurance companys. I see your having a issue so I figured I would give my insight.

The problem you have with the paint sticking is the fake chrome. For a permanent fix you need to sand the chrome off. Most likely will need a sander with at least 320 grit. Once the chrome is removed you will have exposed raw plastic. You will now need to remove the 320 scratches. I would sand with 500 grit to remove the 320 scratches and then 800 grit to remove the 500 grit scratched. You can use water with the 800 to help get the grill get really smooth.

Now the raw plastic will be rather smooth. You will need to apply a PLASTIC ADHESION PROMOTER. You can get this in a spray can. Dupont product number. A-2330s.. Spray an even coat over entire grille.Wait 20min before the next step.

Now base coat will not stick to raw plastic or adhesion promoter. But... primer will. And base coat sticks to primer. So with that said you now need to prime your grill. After primer you can base then clear.. If you follow these steps it will not fail. Any questions give me a shout.

    Hey Thomas,
Thanks a lot. I have tried sanding the chrome off and it has been rather difficult. Especially with my 2006 Corolla grill, there isn't much plastic in the first place and it is pretty fragile.

I did sand quite a bit more off, then bought some Valspar "plastic primer" which I was told at Lowes was the best they had for this application.

Hopefully no rocks get me lol...

Is the chrome a thin sheet? If so you may be able to take a heat gun to it and get it to lift from the grill.

I did mine with all dupli color can and my clear started chipping/peeling the other day. Pretty shur it was too cold in my garage when doing it.

Now I have to try and sand the clear off to reapply. Probly goona be a bitch. I will try to fix it one time then just go to the dealer and buy one lol

The clear from automotive touchup is a two part Urethane. You depress a button on the bottom of the can and it releases the catalist. GREAT STUFF!

The "chrome" is usually an aluminum product that is chemically attached.

I sanded all my chrome down with a 100 Grit sanding sponge this time to give it more to attach to. Then I followed this with 3 coats of adhesion promoter, 3 coats of primer, sanded that smooth and hit it with 3 more coats of primer.

Now I will be painting it body color, followed by a 2k clear coat (spray can with hardener) and then I am going to grab a can of clear plastidip and cover the entire thing in plastidip for added protection.

I read through this, and I was wondering the whole time why you didnt use the 2k clear. Im glad to see you switched. My concern was the UV protection. I want to do this to mine, but I dont want to redo it in a year because it yellowed. Keep us updated.

A tip for those that have Silver Streak Mica, Rustoleum 7271 Silver Metallic seems to be a perfect match with about 6 coats of clear over it. I'll post pics after I put it back together, doing the BHLM at the same time...
