Say what you will, but I don't really care about football. Really professional sports as a whole. Maybe it's because I spend my days trying to get my boy students to care about their studies even a fraction as much as they care about football. And the odds of any of these kids going pro is so minimal, compared to the chances that they will have a job where they need to read and write. Athletes get paid SO much, when their positive impact on people is almost nothing, while there are so many people who live their lives for kids, or people in general, and get paid shit.

...sorry I will get off my soapbox now. Hopefully there are still conversations about trucks and wheeling here. I may have to take some time off from TW if it's all football all the time until the Super Bowl.

It's a sport, just like anything else. I enjoyed playing it high school, and now I enjoy watching it.

You enjoy teaching, which is fantastic, but it's not a widely discussed opinionated topic on boards....

True data. And I enjoy teaching most days. I guess I just wish people got paid for the importance they play in the whole scheme of things.

...oh yeah, and yet another fumble from Knowshon Moreno.

The thing that really gets me is who we gave up in that draft to get him and I remember it like it was yesterday because I was SO pissed off. Brian Orakpo. I kept thinking the Bills (who were just ahead of us at #11) were going to take him because they needed a DE plus he was predicted to go in the top 5. Instead he slips all the way to 11 where I'm almost certain the Bills are going to take him. Instead, they take Aaron Maybin (who they cut two years later) and I'm floored. I can't believe my eyes. This top 5 pro-ready DE has fallen into our laps at pick 12 and all that's left is to make the announcement. I see the commissioner walking across the stage within 2min of being on the clock so the Denver brass surely agrees with me with such a quick pick. Then, the announcement 'With the 12th pick the Denver Broncos select.... Knowshon Moreno, running back, Georgia' WTF?!? We had SO many RB's at the time of that pick. Of course Washington wasted NO time snapping him up at pick #13 and he went to the pro bowl his first year. Just one of MANY shit moves under Douche McDaniels. We had a need for defense at the time and he was EASILY the best player at that position (for those who argue you don't draft for need you take the best available player) so there was NO reason to not pick him. So now, every time I see Moreno cough up the ball I cringe at the thought of what could have been. He gives me plenty of opportunities to reminisce too. Granted, Orakpo is now injured but I would still take what he's done to this point over what Knowshon has done to this point.

Oh believe me I completely agree with you on that. Lifesavers should be paid more too, but aren't.

Well most kids aren't trying to go pro in the sport they love to watch on TV. They are fans. They enjoy watching football because it's fun and exciting for them, which is also why the kids learn to balance their time between watching football and studying. Just cause people love watching football every sunday doesn't mean they are not studying their stuff.

Hey football is just like any other form of entertainment. If you don't like it don't watch it. Don't hate on it though. There are those that like watching ballet and others that don't.
I do agree that these athletes are getting paid way to much for what they do. Also agree that more money should be put into the schools. Hoping marijuana is legalized so the taxes from that can go into the schools. That will bring up another debated topic.

Agreed, it is entertainment. That is how you have to teach it to your kids. Have fun playing sports, enjoy watching the pros on tv and do good in school at the same time. Don't put all of your efforts into the sports thinking that will take you through life, most likely wont happen. Education is key, you really cant go much of anywhere without a college degree anymore.

Yes, it will and one that I must disagree with. While I agree that MJ should be legalized I disagree with the stance that it should be taxed for the 'greater good' because that's not what will ultimately happen. It should be legalized (along with most other things) because it's the right thing for a FREE SOCIETY. Creating laws to protect people from themselves is a horrible excuse to strip us of our freedoms one by one. If someone wants to get high in their own home who am I to say they shouldn't be able to? If they go out and cause an accident or commit a crime we already have laws against that stuff. The act of someone simply smoking some pot shouldn't be a crime in and of itself. All making something illegal does is create a black market. Creating a black market makes for higher prices and criminals begin to get involved from the added financial gain. Any doof can see that making things illegal ultimately creates MORE crime and more criminals... not less. Nobody is safer as a result of our two decade 'war on drugs' which has failed horrifically, cost untold good lives and amounts of money that I don't even want to think about. Making something illegal is a weak attempt to look like you're doing something about the problem. If someone wants to get high, they will get high. This is evidenced by all the new stories involving bath salts and hand sanitizer. Face it, people will do ANYTHING to get high if they are so inclined. The true and only way to combat this is a proper upbringing. Teaching children right from wrong and why they wouldn't want to choose to do something. Hell, drinking bleach is dangerous or fatal if done but you don't see young adults drinking bottles of it to kill themselves in record numbers, do you? Why is that? It's not illegal so maybe it has something to do with education and upbringing.

    I digress.

The real topic I wanted to address with your statement is taxing. Those who support the legalization of MJ generally tout the taxation as means to an end and a way to convince those who don't support it that good can come from the legalization of it. This doesn't mean I'm accusing you of any of this so don't take offense since I don't know you personally... just making a general observation based on my interactions and experiences. It is my opinion that it should be legalized and NOT taxed. Our government already has WAY too much of our money and has yet to demonstrate the ability to budget it properly. Giving them more money is akin to giving a crack-head more money thinking it will solve all the problems. The problems only get worse and we have proven that over the past couple of decades. Our government has PLENTY of money to do all that is needed as soon as they cut waste, unnecessary programs and prove that they have the ability to budget just like the rest of us all are forced to do. Giving more of our money to the government fixes NOTHING. Allowing them to tax everything they legalize fixes NOTHING. Allowing them to continue taking from hard working Americans is akin to fanning flames in an attempt to put them out.

Don't believe me? Watch what happens when the tax on cigarettes and alcohol continues rising because people who don't do it feel like those who do should be 'punished for the greater good' because it doesn't affect them. It will get to a point where new black markets will be created which means even more crime and more criminals locked up in our over crowded cages. At some point we need to stand up for the over taxation of EVERYONE even if it doesn't affect you directly.

Legalizing MJ with the qualifier of being taxed sets a dangerous precedent. It should be legal simply for the fact that we live in the freest nation in the world and our government has no right to tell us what we do in our own homes. If someone wants to drink that bleach until they're dead then who are we to tell them they can't? It is their life after all.

I actually agree with your statements on why it should be legalized and the fact that the government cant budget so why should they get more money. Regardless the gov still has problems with money and that is going to continue regardless of taxing or not taxing MJ.

Short or reading that short story...similar to the ban of firearm sales or limiting ammo (just examples) of someone wants them bad enough, it'll happen. Like the Aurora tragedy, while if there are signs posted prohibiting firearms, us legally abiding citizens will abide by it. Criminals? No sir. They'll stuff it (non holstered) down their pants and call it good.

Bingo. Someone else gets it. Laws only affect the law abiding.

It's not regardless. Creating a new tax stream only fuels the fire that is already burning out of control. These types of bills keep getting introduced with clauses that allow for taxation because those who create the bill think they have to to push the law through. I think they would be amazed by how many people are disagreeing simply from the taxation stand point and would otherwise support the legalization.
