Pumps are tested regularly & if they dispense a low octane rating then the minimum octane displayed they're fined heavily.

I usually fill up at sams club and get 91 because its not crazy expensive, and they dont have 87. its either 85 or 91

 

That's because the data would be skewed. In winter months gas stations add 10% ethanol to their fuel blend. Ethanol based fuel has roughly 70% the thermal energy as petroleum based fuel so this translates to varying fuel economy. Just one of the many variables involved in this topic which is why personal MPG is so subjective. Trust me when I say that unless you're getting knock activity your engine has no way of knowing it even has premium gas in it. There's no octane sensor. Only a knock sensor. Any gains you received from running premium were only coincidental based on numerous variables.

 

My understanding was that, in Colorado at least, our fuel always has 10% ethanol added to it. I don't believe you can get ethanol free fuel anywhere at any time in Colorado any more. I think the winter blends contain things like butane that are cheap but have a higher vapor pressure that prevents their use in hotter summer months.
I can say for sure that my mileage went down drastically with the winter blend fuel and has come back up recently.

Only octane story I'll add is to make sure you don't put lower grade than your vehicle is rated. Did that once with the Bimmer... thought I'd try to alternate tanks between 89 & 93 last year when prices were so ridiculous. She bitched & moaned & groaned at me on the 89 the first time I used it. Never again.

 

Yah some cars really do require higher grade fuel. My old land rover ran so shitty on unleaded. Premium was a must.

I save my farts all day long. The funnel them into my fuel tank during one big explosion, no worries they are filtered. That is good for 50 horse.

 

At least 50! More if you ingest burritos.
