You know how the squelch works?

Hopefully that's not an insulting question, but I've been surprised lately at the amount of new cb owners that don't know about the squelch.

I don't necessarily understand it but I know that it's supposed to cancel out background noise. it may be because I don't have anyone to test it with and I am just judging on the channels other people use. Maybe my range just sucks

 

I concur with Eric on this. A bad tune wouldn't result in static on your end, if might cause static for someone trying to listen to you though.

 

Also does you radio have RF Gain?

 

No. It's fairly old. Took it off a jeep I sent to auction. Midland 1001z

 

The coax on the radio side is a little frayed at the screw connector. Small tear in rubber shielding

 

Just so everyone knows... Turn your squelch down so you hear static and set your volume where you want it. Then turn the squelch up just to the point where you hear nothing. Now only signals stronger than what you've "squelched" will come through.

Thats all the squelch does really is set the level of strength the signal has to be to get sent to your speaker.

Because the strength level of the static will vary, you have to constantly fiddle with the squelch to insure that the static doesn't make it through but the clean transmissions do.

Sometimes, if you're trying to communicate with someone far away, you have to turn the squelch down and tolerate some static while you're talking with them.

What does the radio RF gain knob do?

 

makes the rf gain increase or decrease

 

rf gain is essentially adjusting how big of a net u are using to catch signals. squelch is how big the holes are in the netting. best way ive seen to describe it.
most people run with rf gain all the way up to catch as many signals as possible_long distance and short distance. but if u and one other vehcle are right next to eachother and dont change distance, u can turn down the rf gain to only hear what they are saying. adjust squelch after u adjust gain....

u just gotta play with it when talking to someone or numerous people...
