just curious... why would it matter if they can see the keys, or if the doors were unlocked?

I let my truck idle for 5-10 min every morning with the door unlocked and key's in the ignition... always have in cold eviroments.

I hate laws that are "for my protection"... let me protect myself... preferbly with my .45ACP just inside my door.

so is it a law I have to lock my house if my heater is on? LOL

I thought the law was about emissions, not theft.

If it's about theft, then why isn't leaving your vehicle unlocked with the keys in it but not running against the law?

here's the result of my "About 233,000 results (0.70 seconds)" google search
    http://enginesoff.com/2_7_laws_ordinances.htm

"EXCEPTIONS FOR EXTREME COLD TEMPERATURE: Many idling regulations include exemptions for the cold temperatures that are common in Colorado's cold winters. For example, the City & County of Denver's idling ordinance provides exemptions if the ambient temperature has been 20 degrees or colder for the last 24 hours or 10 degrees or colder for the last hour – but this generally occurs only 10-15 days per winter. Shhh... they don't need any more ideas for new laws.

The law is about control. Nobody truly cares about the reason they're just too stupid to realize whatever stupid reason they think the law is for isn't the real reason.

interesting... so technically I can get hit for the "puffer law" because I'm not "setting the brake"

    http://enginesoff.com/pdfs/Colorado-42-4-1206.pdf

"No person driving or in charge of a motor vehicle shall permit it to stand unattended without first stopping the engine, locking the ignition, removing the key from the ignition, and effectively setting the brake thereon, and, when standing upon any grade, said person shall turn the front wheels to the curb or side of the highway in such a manner as to prevent the vehicle from rolling onto the traveled way. Any person who violates any provision of this section commits a class B traffic infraction."

    KDVR article

"Police were also engaging with citizens who reached out to them with “puffing” questions on Tuesday morning, saying they do not issue tickets to drivers who use remote starters to warm up their cars. Police also confirmed that it is illegal to start a car and leave it running with your keys inside even on private property in Aurora."

That's a control law all the way around. Easier to write "puffing" tickets than it is to recover a stolen vehicle.

My van idles for about 20 minutes on the street in front of the house every cold morning. It's a friggen icebox. I don't think anybody would want it anyway.

Also, I see city vehicles running all the time unattended....

So long as they create classes to exempt certain groups it makes it a LOT easier to get the bills signed into law. See recent idiotic firearm laws for further proof. If it's good for some citizens it's good for ALL citizens.

Ha! you should see all the LEO vehicles at the 7-11 at 119 and I-25.

Any time of year, there will be half a dozen or more of them parked outside running for 1/2hr or better.

I'm sure they have a reason, just as anyone warming up their car has their reasons.

Well that turned into an interesting page. When I had my car with remote start back in 2005 the law in Jeffco read that it did not matter if it was remote or if the doors were locked. I have always understood the law to be a "control law" to diminish the temptation of would be thieves. Glad to see others did some research on how the statues read today in different cities.

I happen to just love my garage. :D

My reason is I'm an American and if I want to park at a gas station and let my car idle 24/7 and move it only to get back over to the pump to fill the tank again then what business is it of anyone else's? I'm getting REALLY tired of the arrogant idiots of this nation who think it's their business how others live their lives and feel it's their duty to tell others how to go about it. I don't need a reason other than I'm an American in the freest nation in the history of the world. Nobody can see it but all these little BS laws serve only to slowly chip away at that. Year by year. Decade by decade. Eventually we'll be as bad as China and at this rate it could be in our lifetime all while the majority will laugh at the idea of it even being possible when we're already sliding down that slippery slope.

Their keys are not in the ignition, and doors are secured.
You can remove the key from the ignition and keep the vehicle running....if someone gets in, taps the brake - it kills the engine.

...just part of the further pussification of America. Strong men are being slowly domesticated by bullshit nanny laws they are forced to comply with or be labeled criminal. The push back will be on the world stage when we are bullied by nations who no longer fear the strong men & women of this nation. I remember similar threats in recent history that were met with a giant middle finger.

Sony made one of the best decisions ever in pulling that movie. It's guaranteed that more people will watch it now.
