Since we're on the topic, I know this probably has come up a lot... but what's the best recovery strap for my 1st gen V6 extra cab?

I have an old one (circa 1994) that I could use for "just in case" on road pulling and stuff... but it's kind of beat up. I want something new for off road recovery.

And I'm with Old Brett... no hooks or anything like that (which I'm sure you're all on board with too)

My daughter is 8 years, and our son is 19mos...out of all the gifts yesterday, he is obsessed with the powerwheels...he spent the majority of the day sitting in, getting out, and driving that thing....lol. Boys are going to be boys.

One thing that helps me out a lot is that we don't have TV, she doesn't watch much media (only football  ), etc... so she's not exposed to the marketing blitzes aimed at children.

We listen to music 24/7. So I bought her an iPod and will download any and all appropriate music for her. My grandfather passed on his love of music to me, same with my dad... now I'm doing to same for her.

I think she's old enough now to give her unfettered access to my vinyl and 78s stacks. Her mind was blown a couple of years ago when I showed her was a record player is and how it works. She had only known music to be digital at that point.

Oh yeah, I forgot about that. I bought her one a couple of years ago.

Bought some outfits and such too. But she knows my rant by heart, "no way I'm paying $120 for a doll bed (or fill in any other item here)."

My daughter has a walk in closet and FFS I built a 2 ft section of it for her American Doll's wardrobe

But it's my girl so...

The key to a strap is kinetic energy. Too heavy and you might as well be on the end of a chain. Too light and they snap.

20,000 lb strap is just fine for a 5-8000 lb truck. 20 ft length for most applications. Imo. :D No hooks. Never ever tie two straps together with any kind of metal device, get a longer strap or deal with the knot.

My daughter has 4 american girl dolls. That phase started with grandma the day she was born. We buy her the limited production one every year. My uncle is retired and he does wood working so he makes all the furniture to go with them for her. It's awesome the things he can do. Preston was having a blast on my daughters atv power wheel. I can only imagine how much fun he's having. Makala was doing wheelies on it haha.
That's awesome, she will be able to hear music on vinyl! I took all my dads old vinyl and still love listening to it. We just caved in and got TV, but my wife was going nuts working fu time and nursing school full time, she needed an outlet so I caved.

    Re: straps

I have a few of them. One has hooks on it.
I agree that flying hooks sounds like a bad idea, but if the strap is used with a hook at each vehicle and the hooks are properly secured, I don't think there's much difference.

If the strap breaks, the hooks shouldn't go flying. They should stay where they're attached. If the mounting point fails then I doubt a flying clevis is much preferable to a flying hook. I think as long as you use your head, make sure things are securely attached, and take safety precautions, a strap with hooks (all else being equal) should serve you as well as one without.
Also a couple of clevis will cost more than that tow rope without hooks.

I've seen things that would make you cringe.;)
No hooks. Stored energy has to go somewhere when that strap breaks, I don't want to take a chance being on the other end. Also, straps with hooks are generally way underrated for pulling strength. It's true, it might stay attached, but slack happens and straps with hooks rearrange themselves.
Clevis or D ring, attached securely to the vehicle, is cheaper than repairing body damage.

I've seen two guys hook two 20' straps together with a D ring in the middle. One strap broke, the strap with the ring attached went through a tail gate, no dent, went through it.:D

Ost, you mentioned crap weather going to Nebraska and back, was it rain or did they get snow/ice? I'm coming through there tomorrow and was wondering what I'm going to be running into.

I really lucked out in winning an Ironman 4x4 Recovery kit at Moab in 2013. The kinetic strap in it is 9m x 8,000KG and is the nicest strap I've ever used for pulling out vehicles. It's got a nice amount of stretch, and never feels harsh when you're pulling on it. I've got a cheaper 30' x 3" wide strap that I carry just in case, but after using a good kinetic strap I cringe watching a solid strap. Ask Kipp what he thinks after seeing it in action

results of broken straps with heavy objects attached to the end. Or straps attached to things not designed to be yanked on.
