whats your problem eric? coming out with the axle. small 10inch pry bar, position it on the small inserts on the inner cup of the cv. smack the pry bar with a large dead blow. axle pops out of the diff.
axle going in.... put some grease on the c clip on the end of the axle. the grease holds the c clip in place. if u dont do this, the c clip will spin and the opening will face up. this is bad, it wont allow you to smack it back in because the clip will block its entry.

always keep the c clips opening down. position the inner cup of the axle into the diff, spin slightly til u feel the teeth line up. have a dead blow within reach. once the teeth line up, apply good pressure on the outer cv cup with your left hand. making sure the cv is straight headed into the diff. hit the axle with the rubber dead blow hard. it should pop right in. after a good few hits. then pull out on the inner cup, this checks to see if the clip is doing its job and holding the axle in.

your right it does take a fair amount of effort to hold the 3 parts all the way compressed and straight. especially because your working on the ground. position your body so you can hold and wack at the same time. lol

Actually we finished up quite a bit ago. Been cleaning up and talking trash about all you monkeys behind your backs.

No more vibes! Yay, I'm psyched. Damned if that little job didn't kick my ass though.
I think I got the truck where everything was on the tighter side of the tolerances.

The job itself wasn't super complicated or difficult to understand.

What absolutely kicked my ass was the axle. It did NOT want to come out and took much coaxing. The frustration involved with getting that damn thing out ruined my attitude and kind of sent everything into a downward spiral from there.
Next up was driving the new bushing home. That bushing was super tight and took much more to get it in than I was anticipating. An 1-1/4" impact socket matched up in diameter nicely and, paired with a long extension, made a good driver for the first 1/2" or so but then it was just too much hammering for too little return. That's when I busted out the air chisel. I put a pointed bit in it, stuck that in the end of the extension and hammered it home.
At this point, I was tired, sore, angry and it was dark. Not a good state of mind to be in when now the axle would not go back in. That's when I started scaring dogs and children and posting here :D

Brett saw my posts and graciously came over to help. It was just what I needed. A fresh set of eyes, a fresh set of hands, and someone slightly older than my children to yell at. :D

The bushing is made with a cylinder of unobtainium surrounded by more normal metal. The surrounding metal bends around at one end to cover the end of the unobtainium. This is the end that you face outwards to give you something to hammer on to drive it in. I had noticed when I got the bushing, that the lip seemed to be just slightly too large, making it extend past the inner diameter of the unobtainium the tinniest bit. I had wondered about that, but I had also forgotten all about it by this time. Hammering the sleeve into the differential made this lip a little worse I think. About half of the circumference felt nice and flush, but the other half had an even more pronounced lip in the outside metal. This is what was preventing me from putting the axle back in. I took a half round bastard (a file, not another helper. Brett's more of a rat tail anyway) and filed off that lip being careful not to harm the inner unobtainium. With that lip out of the way, and an extra pair of hands to hold the ungainly axle straight and compressed together, we were able to pop the axle back in finally. It was all smooth sailing from there. Everything else went back together slicker than snot and a quick test drive proved that the whole thing was worth it and I was vibe free!

    TL;DR
Axle removal and reinstall was more difficult than I thought it would be.
    Brett helped.
    Operation a success.
I'm sore today. It's hell getting old. How do you do it Gramps?

Sounds like young Brett was busy this weekend, wiring seats, installing cv's, punching bag duty, lol.

Also sounds like 1st gens are easier to work on.

Replaced the rear brake shoes, by myself, took about 2 hours including the 45 minute trip to the parts store and waiting on the train, chasing the dog around, etc...
