Looking good Eric, did your wash off the first Gen contamination that Brett spread all over your rig and driveway?

I got my technician for ham today. Aced the tech bombed the general though. Weighing the baofeng vs a quality kenwood yeasu or icom ht.

Ah. .. another thing we did today.
    Tested the baofeng setups.
Brett drove one way and I drove the other.
Basically they had the same if not slightly less range than what we got out of our CBs

I don't know what kind of power the other ht radios put out. I think the baofengs are 4 or 5 watts. I think a real mounted mobile typically puts out 70 watts? But you also have to spend several hundred dollars on just the radio.
So you're not going to reach out 30 miles with a baofeng but you could certainly communicate with anyone you're wheeling with. You could also communicate with FRS, GMRS, MURS, or other radios although technically not legally.
I programmed forest service, DOW, local PD and FD. it makes a good scanner, just don't key up the mic :D

Wondering now if the range would change much with another frequency. All we tried was FRS 1.

Rubber antenna or did your others come in? I kinda want to explore the hobby a bit so I'm considering a yeasu ft 60r. Trying to stay less than 200. I guess it will depend on the tax return I file tomorrow

Tram mag mount antenna. Gets great reviews

Looks like that yeasu only puts out about 5w. Not sure it would be worth the $ difference vs a $30 baofeng as I doubt it would have greater range.

Just thought of something though... I think the TRAM is setup to work best on 2m/70cm... maybe the FRS frequencies are outside of it's ideal range and it would perform better on a regular 2m channel.

I don't think we want Scout leaves for Brett.
He's looking for some significant lift and weight capacity.
I think it will take some thicker leaves and they may need to be arched harder.
Your name came up RE rearching... You'll probably be hearing from young Brett :D

I may have used yours.... I'm not sure.
I have a few sets of stock leafs actually.
    Did yours have an AAL?
If not, then I probably used yours.
If they did have an AAL then I didn't use them and they're still in the garage with the set off my truck (also with an AAL)
I wanted to keep my set intact incase this whole experiment was a disaster, then I could just put them back on.

The "donor" leaves I was referring to were given to me by a neighbor and I think he said they were for a 4" lift on an old Scout II. We used those leaves, added to the top two tacoma leaves to make the "bastard pack"

    Did some further experimenting tonight...
The TRAM says it's "Pre Tuned 144-148/435-450 MHz so 2m and 70cm.
I tried range testing on 146.025 and 446.000
We got about a third greater range on 146.025 than either the CB or 446.000
Still not crazy range, but clear enough at ~3.5 miles.
