U must have missed the 9news story with out in Castle Rock. There was literally a couple of people crying because they are poisoning them so a new shopping center may break ground for construction there.

I like them little things. I drive by them every day and think to myself. They make perfect little whoops to test the valving on the truck when it's ready. :mudding:

I'm not down with poisoning the prairie dogs at all. But I won't shed tears.

However it's really bothersome to think that people merely see them as pests, nuisances or targets and just want them gone.

They don't realize prairie dogs are vital prey for hawks, eagles, owls, falcons, coyotes, etc...

When the predators move out everyone wonders, "gee where's all that beautiful CO wildlife?"

I don't disagree with this statement, but you and I both know that the ecosystem is so unbalanced now that trying to save one part without fixing all of the others simply leads to over-population and disease. Human intervention to attempt to maintain balance is all that can be done now that we are so far down this road.

    Humans - FTW!

don't forget all the plagues they carry.

i don't think we're losing any predators for lack of prairie rats.

Truth, I can say at my buddies farm they reproduce about as fast as we take them out... Plus they damage crops, make giant holes that cattle break legs in so bye bye! I will say on our electric call the coyotes like the rabbit call better than anything.

I used to go out and shoot prairie dogs at Guenella Pass. It's not too far away.

Sean, you know who's birthday was yesterday with your mod powers? ;)

How would you propose we rid them from populated areas then? My problem is I live in an area of Fort Collins/Loveland where the hippies think we need to create refuge for them and they carry disease and attract predators... coyotes, hawks and the most dangerous to our kids and dogs: rattle snakes. We live in a populated neighborhood that made the Denver Post when they did a story about rattle snakes in populated areas. So in our case we HAVE to be able to rid our area of them. If the predators move another half mile West or North it wouldn't be the end of the world. Plenty of wide open land in CO for them to find plenty of food and a happier version of what their lifestyle is supposed to be half a click up the road. This idea that we need to protect them and vilify humans who would try to control their numbers is some liberal bullshit I can't get onboard with and I LOVE animals. They carry horrible diseases and being near populated areas is not a good idea. At all. If we called them what they truly are I don't think people would be as gung ho about saving them: Prairie rats. If you've ever seen one run over and start snacking on his buddies body before it even began cooling you'd probably have a different opinion of them too.

Bingo. I hate pigeons for many of the same reasons that I hate prairie rats. They belong on the prairie... not our neighborhoods or anywhere near them. I realize you're going to say that urban sprawl is encroaching on their homes but you and I both know that's not something that can be fixed. As long as liberal welfare programs reward humans for indiscriminate reproduction we will keep needing places to put everyone. It amazes me how badly liberal ideas have screwed up major metropolitan areas which expands to our wild lands more than they realize and then they want to bitch about how we are forced to deal with said issues these problems they create.

Disclaimer: I'm not pointing any fingers here when I say a term like 'liberals' I'm just painting in broad strokes. If you're offended then maybe you should take more facts & a little bit of reality into account when you consider your stance on topics.
