I don't think you'll like it Travis. I think for offroading you're going to want something that clamps stuff together tightly.

This looks like just a plunger in a hole? Nothing to stop up and down motion.

Might wear out your spindle quickly too.

 

I simply bolted mine to the bumper. I keep a 3/4" wrench in the seat console to open it up.

 

Was thinking about bringing the dodge to the mod day so we had a dry place to work on it, but it has no gas pedal at the moment lol

 

The plate would Also be a rest for the arm to avoid wear on the spindle. I see what you are saying but my design has somewhat limited what options I have.

I have thought about something like that but I would Try to find a threaded piece that had a handle so that it didn't require tools. Not so sure the wife would be okay with something like that just because she wants ease-of-use. Unfortunately her Input has to be taken into account on this.

You could always weld a handle on the nut, but I understand what you're saying. That was for the old Scout and function was more important than form when I built it.

 

I have been an idiot. I can use a latch like everyone else uses I just will put the handle on the bumper and the catch on the arm. Not sure why I never thought of that but that will be much cheaper and easier. I just wish there was a way to lock that latch so that I never end up hitting the handle going up or down something steep and having it open.

 

I think there are latches with locking provisions

Here is another that incorporates a welded tab like my bolt on to help with wiggle.

 

That is the new plan but I will have the handle on the bumper and the catch on the arm (so the opposite of those) and I found one with a lock:
