No test required, just the fee. It used to be $90 for five years, supposedly in September it dropped to $65. The license covers the entire family though, so not just a single radio/person. Apply online at http://wireless.fcc.gov/uls/index.htm?job=home or there's two forms you have to fill out (according to http://www.buytwowayradios.com/Info/GMRS-FCC-Licensing.aspx).

I suppose your definition of 'crazy' may vary. In the case of just buying some radios and the old fee, paying more than 3x the cost of the radio for an operator license was a bit much. Even with a higher end one and the new fee, it's still cost of the radio x 2. There's a proposal to eliminate the fee, but it's been pending for about five years now. The single most useful thing I found with the Rhino was being able to send your GPS location to the other unit so they could see you on the map. Other than that, two devices running of the same battery (especially a 5 watt transmitter) just killed batteries that much faster. *shrug* Like anything else, whatever works for you and your use case.

Yeah we aren't planning on running them on that high of a power unless needed. I'm going to use them for back country skiing as well. But we like the silent text of the radios as well so we can ask for help with out disturbing them if they are stalking an animal. I read that in 2010 they tried to get rid of the few but $65 isn't terrible, could be a lot worse. I got a really good deal on the radio, it was actually cheaper than the gps I was going to buy and I get the two way radio on top of it. Cabelas online had them on sale for $329 down from $499 and I got another discount so I paid $313. I was buying a new gps either way so I could buy the hunt chip. My old etrex did not have the capability to load maps onto.
