The major issues for us started in the early-mid 70s when the US had a true corn shortage and had to buy from the Soviet Union. Obviously that didn't sit well with us and the Dept of Ag essentially told the farmers to start growing the shit out of corn so we never have another shortage. Well... the price of corn plummeted because supply outgrew demand. So these farmers had to grow more corn in order to bring in the same revenues. More corn = more supply = cheaper prices = need to grow more = more supply = cheaper prices....

Flash forward a couple of decades later and the amount of corn grown in our society is insane. Corn is in everything. We're making "plastic" out of it, high fructose corn syrup, other sweetners that are used in toothpaste, cosmetics, citric acids, adhesives... and of course livestock feed.

Naturally you can make an ethanol out of corn too... so why not throw it in gasoline to burn?

The problem is, the amount of fresh water that goes into growing corn is now "wasted" as corn's primary function isn't used for human consumption.

This is my biggest issue with it.

Yup, I have to burn considerably more fuel to go the same distance if it is ethanol-free. More fuel combustion = more emissions.

So long as OPEC continues to try and screw the US by lowering the cost of oil to the point it doesn't make domestic oil production a viable option, then our oil reserve doesn't mean much.

    Well I don't think that's true either...
If we don't export oil, and we are the world's largest producer..... well we must be using our own oil.

There's a lot of misinformation out there.
Our elected officials don't hesitate to lie to us either so that doesn't help the misinformation.

And before a mod gets their panties all wadded up I'm not talking politics. Personally I think the whole idea of dems and repubs is fabricated. There's just big brother and it's them against us. How you like that? :tinfoilhat:

Couple of posts snuck in there. I was replying to @chadstacoma

Did you read about the latest opec meeting? Seems they're not trying to screw the US so much as all scrabbling for their own piece of the pie.
Opec wants higher oil prices more than anyone but their not willing to cut production. Remember supply and demand from high school economics? China's demand has been waning. Supply is at an all time high.
What's really scary is how dependant Russia is on oil exports. They can't sustain their economy at current prices. Watch. Putin will be dropping bombs on someone's heads here shortly.

This whole discussion (or more accurately my little side bar) reminded me of "So long and thanks for all the fish"
Anyone ever read any Douglas Adams?

I'll put it in a little quote box so you're not subjected to it if you don't want to be, but here's a little excerpt

I think Adams pretty much hit it on the head there

Did you copy and paste that off a scroll or something?

I almost dislocated my thumb trying to get to the bottom of the post on my phone.
