I carry a speedy seal kit and have onboard air just in case: http://www.amazon.com/ARB-10000010-Orange-Speedy-Repair/dp/B004P91FCO

It's not going to do anything if you get a sidewall puncture though, so a full-size spare is definitely recommended. If you can't find one on craigslist, try some local tire shops. When I had my 255's put on I didn't have the funds to get a 5th, but the shop I went to just happened to have a used spare of the same size. It wasn't pretty, but it's better than nothing.

    Thanks for the info guys!

Yes, I had no idea what I was getting myself into! I have to keep reminding myself "I don't need that, or that, or that..."

It does happen. I can think of three I've had off the top of my head, and not on hard trails. Three and a half. First and a half was outside of Buena Vista where I discovered it going flat as we set up camp to do some 14ers. The following day I took it in and had it patched. The day after that, it got a different puncture just after the first switchback on Antero after clearing treeline. Had to be changed on the spot, used a passing by jeep to try to and anchor the uphill side of the truck so it didn't slide off. It was on stock size tires (on a Silverado), but due to terrain we still had to stack rocks and such to get the jack to work.

Another was coming down from Rollins Pass. That was a slow leak though, made it to Nederland to fill it back up, and then back up to FTC before it went down again.

And then there was this fucking thing that happened when we were camped on Paradise Divide outside of Crested Butte. I thought the tire was toast for sure given the size of the rock, but place in Gunnison managed to patch it.

I may have had more, but none come to mind. Haven't lost a sidewall yet. But yeah, what others said. Get a used tire for a spare. Ask on here for whatever size, check craigslist, even tire stores. You are going to want it at some point. And you'll probably need it most when you don't have it. :D

Oh, and if you need help convincing your wife, just get stuck. Or show her some of the stuck stories on here about waiting in the cold four four to six hours for rescue.

i beg to differ. ive had a side wall gash that i repaired with saftey wire and about 60 plugs. not ideal conditions but it got me off the trail.
just get the red plugs, they can be had from here http://www.safetyseal.com/safetysealoriginal.php ive tried the black ones and they can work but for real punctures the reds are the way to go. had 30 reds without wire once that held for a day or so.

that rock probably spent hundreds of thousands of years sitting there just thinking, man one day im really going to shit on someones parade. and then WHAM. success. that'll teach someone. lol

i dont see quite an issue with flats if you have a plug kit and air. half the time i dont even carry a spare. how many people have on board air?

But those also look like road tires. I still carry a spare, but am not extremely worried about it with the 10 ply tire.

Enough to make it a lot of fun!
I have on board air. I have had I ever since I started wheeling. Just moved up to an arb compressor from a cheap harbor freight pancake compressor.
He is just talking about the list of stuff he needs to talk his wife into letting him buy.
