yes, hence why some are so slow to make the jump. Several Off Road groups are making the whole sale jump to HAM which is nice because right away you know you're going to use it.

but I think @teamhypoxia has the $35 bayofung Hand held so you can get the radio cheap... but you have to invest the time and energy into study'n and testing to get your license. something I'm hoping to do soon.

I've been told CB with a 108" antenna in flat open ground has a max range (when not boosted) of about 15 miles...
HAM, 15 miles is NOTHING... and it's MUCH CLEARER... think Cell phone clarity.

Yeah, there are a couple different model numbers in that price range. I'm not sure what (if any for our use) difference there is between them, but I know quite a few people who have the same one.

The test and studying is the easy part. Learning to use the radio and set the frequency, offset, tone, etc is harder on some of the radios imho

Better to ask what I have not done.
So whats the big difference as to why you can get one for 35$ and the one that you can get for 590$??? I would assume the range is the same?

well you're pretty lucky then, I don't think I've gone on a trail run where someone's CB wasn't cutting out or they'd be out of range (trees and hills KILL your range)

but as @odomandr said, he's made contact 30-40 miles away. in an emergency situation, that can make all the difference. especially if you're in the mountains or Utah on infrequently traveled trails it could literally mean life/death (course you shouldn't be wheeling alone anyways!)

    What haven’t I changed?
This is the main motivation for me wanting to make the jump. I'm not #EAF, hell I'm not even really #E, but for the few times that I'm out in the middle of nowhere with a buddy, it's good to know that I can call for help if I need it, and APRS with GPS would make finding me a lot easier.

I have a uv5r and a diamond mag mount. Someone might have used it on frs to contact our base camp in needles about 15 miles away a few weeks back. They had bubble walkies and no cb as they were on dual sports. Saved gas from being used in remote area

The ability to bump up from 5 watts to 65 watts and reach further is why my Kenwood is 125 rather than a 35 dollar baofeng that is stuck at 8 watts
