I have a nice 55-200 but i haven't messed w night shots on it, only used my stock lens that came with my D3000

Yeah, I havent used my 55-210 either for night stuff... other than zooming in on the moon. But its still only a little ball in the center of the picture. For stars, its always been the 19-50.. at 19. So I would guess you'd be happy with the "cheaper" of those two lenses.

 

I meant that the wide angles are the performers but i was still impressed with what the larger ones get.

I got these and they work great with my lenses... went out to take a picture of a flower yesterday to test them out again. The fucking things close at night. And I was too tired to mess with it when I got home today.

It's not a good lens. That said, the lens you have is better than the one you don't (or can't afford). It does have quite a following for astro, though some of those still mention the optic issues with it (including the guy whose picture taken with it is going to be a postage stamp). Personally, I only shoot lenses from the camera maker now, though I have used Tamron and Sigma in the past. It's a lot like a lift for your truck - you can do blocks, shocks, coilovers, and long-travel or even SAS. Obviously price and capability goes up. There's always talk about do it right the first time, but if you don't want to wait and not be able to do the thing at all vs go cheap, end up replacing/upgrading later, but still have been doing in the meantime. Gear matters less than the photographer, and you'll know when you want/need to spend more on something.

You have an APS-C camera, so be aware that lens will be the equivalent of a 21mm for you in terms of field of view. Also, you mention the 24mm... The field of view difference between 14mm and 24mm is significant (crop factor aside). They're different purposes. If you want wide, go wide. Price should only be a consideration when you're comparing the same kind of lens (ie, similar focal length).

As it happens, the lens he linked to is a manual focus only.

I was kinda thinking the same - one specific for gear and techniques and such.

I need to go down the camera rabbit hole, forsure. It's been a struggle of time and such lately.

Right now i have a nikon D3000 body(got for free) and the two lenses I got with it are labelled as such, "AF-S Nikkor 18-55mm 1:3.5-5.6G" and "AF-S Nikkor 55-200mm 1:4-5.6G ED"

My setup very much so outperforms the user(me). I just really dig the whole night sky photography thing and I keep reading things that suggest my current lens don't have a low enough F-value to perform well. granted I barely know how to make the camera perform well

 

I think your setup is fine for starting out with night sky photography. Your 18-55mm lens is 2/3 stops slower than that 14mm you linked, so you're going to need to really crank up the ISO on your camera to avoid streaking on the stars which will introduce more noise into the picture, but once everything gets scaled down to web size the noise will be mostly a non-issue and some of it can be removed with a little bit of post processing (remember to save pics as RAW and not JPEG!) Eventually you'll probably find that you need a newer camera body with better low-light performance and perhaps a faster lens, but like wheeling, photography is a sort of iterative process where you first discover your limits, overcome them, and then discover limitations in your gear and upgrade.
