Lift doesn't help clear tires except at ride hide. If you're clearanced right, you can run 35s at stock height.

Just out of curiosity why did you chose to go to 35s on stock suspension? Do you plan to lift in the future or are you planning to stay stock height?

Unlikely that someone would spend the time and money properly clearing 35s and not upgrade suspension. Usually suspension precedes larger tires as well. I could easily run my 295s on stock suspension because I've spent the tire to clear them throughout the entire range of travel and lock to lock.

FWIW, best suspension performance comes from balancing up and down travel, which happens with less lift than most people are going for. 1.5" or so. Hence why I have less lift than most. Regardless when you compress your suspension, you'll inevitably end up at what would be stock ride height at some point. If you're not rubbing then, you won't rub on stock suspension.

Limiting uptravel is another part of this equation that is another argument entirely. No point in bigger tires is you're loosing wheel travel IMO.

TLDR: lift height does not mean more tire clearance unless you only ever drive to the mall.

I choose 35s on stock suspension because I needed to buy new tires and I just want to run 35s till the build begins and don't want to put much money into lifting it because it will all get torn out soon enough.
I did 35s because I enjoy the benefits of a bigger tire; more flotation and better traction and ground clearance when aired way down.

Short term plan is that I will most likely do 5100s to level the front out (rear is going to get the shackle flipped).

As soon as the truck gets payed off I will be doing a 9" front and will probably run 37s or 40s.

Plus these tiny tires look weird.

Might as well throw gearing in there too.

I will rock with the stock gears till its new axle time. No reason to gear and lock these axles if I am to be building 9s soon.
I have a 5 mile commute, shouldn't bug me too much.

I hear ya. I should of mention when I saw you wanted 37-40's, gearing would help. Or a tow pig and trailer. :D

I'm not sure I've ever seen a 2nd gen Tacoma with a 9" lift. I'm curious to see what that would look like. Especially with 40s!
