Yea, those guys know EVERYTHING. lol.

I had a friend's mom take her PC to "Geek Squad". Oy, they're anything but. Morons... Long backstory there, I'll save you guys the pain. Just whatever you do, for goodness sakes, DO NOT take your busted computer to Geek Squad.

Anyhoo, Asus is good. I don't like glossy screens, but anymore you don't really have a choice unless you go business line (which is a good option (extra warranty!!) if you don't mind the lack of graphics cards).

Business-line lappys will do that no problemo. I was looking at Dell and HP's business line rigs, and I kept finding they all had Quadro's or "workstation" graphics cards - IE good at photo editing, CAD etc but awful with modern games. If you're not gaming on it, I would highly recommend a business line rig... Although it will cost moar, the additional warranty is (usually) worth it.

I've had good luck with HP, even on their consumer line. Dell's consumer line leaves a lot to be desired, but I know they've gone thru some revampings lately. Might be better than they were when my gf got her Dell Studio rig (~2 years now?) Her display hinges have started to crack the actual plastic case. Stupid design, but I haven't seen it in any of their business rigs.

With all that said, Asus is still a great laptop choice - again, I just can't stand the lack of matte display choice on their product lineup... so I went with an HP.

when you say matte vs glossy...you talking about the shell or the screens have an actual glossiness or flatness to them?

Sorry, I'm really, REALLY picky when it comes to computers. Took me months of research to finally settle on a rig, no joke...

Glossy screens are more reflective, so they suck in the sun or really any light that is behind them. Read - glare. The pros of glossy are the colors 'pop' more, are more vibrant.

Matte screens are 'dull', the colors don't pop as much - but the color reproduction is still accurate. These types of screens are easier to clean, and do not suffer from glare (although it does still occur).

I find my eyes are strained more when using a glossy screen vs. matte. That was my main issue, I didn't want to strain in front of the screen.

I'm going to post a bunch of links you can read, so you know I'm not full of it :p.

    http://www.scrapjazz.com/topics/Photography/Photo_Developing/437.php

    http://www.squidoo.com/matte-vs-glossy-screens

    http://www.tested.com/news/glossy-vs-matte-lcds-the-great-display-debate/238/

Basically matte screens are usually seen in businesses (most business grade LCD's/laptop screens are matte). Consumers seem to prefer glossy, because for movies and gaming they do "look" better.

Edit - I just looked back at the pic of your desk, I can't tell for sure but it appears the laptop and the middle screen are matte, while the screen on the right is glossy. If you know anyone with an Apple laptop, it will have a glossy screen (as seen in the links above). I can almost guarantee that Dell laptop you have on your desk is a matte screen, so you can compare.

cool lets bash what I do for a living. Your friends mom had an issue so of course that makes sense we're all morons. I have helped a few members here and stay behind what I've worked on and helped with.

Bob I'll be happy to give you advice on a computer. Asus is def a great manufacturer. Number 1 in the world as far as failure rates. They build their computers from the ground up with a majority of their own parts.

Lately, I've been seeing tons of HPs with mobo and other various problems. HP used Asus mobos a few years ago but now went with a cheaper board, which made their quality drop pretty fast. Toshiba is right up there as well for quality and reliability. Gateway, which is now owned by Acer is a lower end manufacturer, just not built to last.

Not bashing what you do for a living, just the horrible corporation you work for.

I've had many, MANY bad stories from "Geek Squad". They are anything but in everyone I've talked to. Also in every experience I've had with them. So it's not just some isolated incident.

Don't take it so personally... I didn't call you a moron directly, last time I checked...

failure rate as in lack of failure i presume?

so for the $$ Asus is a good deal then?

i just never seen them before, but then again, i haven't really looked at new computers in a while so i'm outta the loop...

i'd probably go through you guys so i can use my best buy card and get 0% for 18 months on the purchase, so products that you carry and that you recommend for my uses i'd definitely be interested in...

hardest thing that i put my computer through is photo editing and probably video editing at some point...but it's for side work and recreation so it doesn't have to be top of the line...<$600 would be ideal

I wouldn't go as far as horrible. I do know some locations and techs hardly give a shit. Especially at the service center for things that can't be fixed in store ie cracked screen. The store I'm at in Lakewood and came from in Parker have always been extremely highly rated. Currently in my store now I work with very knowledgeable techs. And a number 3 precinct in the company with customer satisfaction. What issues did you have? You can keep them brief.

Yea as in least amount of failures.
Asus first started as a parts company. Then custom/special order online only. Now with more consumer based they're becoming more popular. I think retail wise best buy is one of the few companies that carry them.

You won't be doing editing that you'll need something with a phenomenal graphics card. Most around your price range are going to have shared memory but will still do just fine.

I did not mean for this to be a personal attack...

    1) Had a customer of mine (yes, I fix computers in my spare time...) say they had Geek Squad out to their house. They had one computer that was acting up. They stated this is the only computer the tech should work on. The tech "connected" (his words) to all of his computers, and charged him $250 per computer. There were 7 computers in total in the house. You can imagine the bill...

    2) Had another customer (friend's mom) said she brought her computer to Geek Squad because of BSOD's. She just wanted to backup any data from the HDD and start fresh. Geek Squad said the drive was empty. They said they connected it to one of their rigs, and they couldn't recover any data and she'd have to send the machine off to a level 3 center or some crap. I plugged in a live Ubuntu USB key, and copied all the data off in less that 15 minutes. They charged her ~$100 to do nothing, and scared the crap out of her because she thought all her data was gone.

There's others, even my own personal experience with them (brought in a laptop with a failed video card, and wanted them to diagnose... Long story short they couldn't find anything wrong, although the machine would lock up HARD when any hardware acceleration was used.)

I'm sure you're a sharp kid. We've talked in person before. But the company you work for are full of crooks. I've seen many articles about how Geek Squad employees steal customer data.... I could go on.

I know you're not personally attacking me, just frustrates me to hear Geek Squad in general is full of morons when in reality it's not like that. As I stated I do agree with you some techs don't check things thoroughly, and don't care to take of people. I do know you also work on computers, I remember our conversation.

Procedures change quite often when things like that happen to avoid situations like those stated. Data for example, our back up machines are audited weekly, I have seen entire precincts fired because of stealing data. Data privacy is 0 tolerance in my location as it should be anywhere. And when data can't be recovered there is the level 3 which goes out to a clean room to pull data, but she would have been refunded if no work was done.

I'm not saying you're wrong in that you've had issues, I just disagree how you place those issues on all Geek Squads. Yea those sound like shitty problems that could have been avoided, but clearly that's not how every place is, if it were, Geek Squad wouldn't be around.
