The chicken tax is a 25% tariff on potato starch, dextrin, brandy, and light trucks imposed in 1963 by the United States under President Lyndon B. Johnson in response to tariffs placed by France and West Germany on importation of U.S. chicken.

Killed the import light truck market, and it's still currently imposed... Because the cheap chicken was being sent to Europe and undermining their expensive domestic chickens.

Companies get around it by assembling stuff in the US that is built overseas, domestics included

I had a '64 CJ6 with the 134ci F Head, (not a flathead) and an '80 something Cherokee with the 4 liter. Both were complete money pits. The Scouts that replaced them were actually more economical.

They're great platforms for trail rigs, since any "real" Jeep will have solids front and rear. They're easy to do axle swaps on, as well, since the drivelines/t cases/whathaveyou tend to be pretty interchangable. But between the electrical gremlins, the idiocy that is the Dana 30, NV t cases, slip yokes, and half-hearted motors later on, I'm over the whole Jeep thing.

At this point, the only Jeeps I'm still after are an LJ Rubicon (4.0L and Rubi 44s), and a CJ8 with the AMC 360. Every time I think about building another WJ as an overland rig, I have to come back to my senses and remember all the $20 electrical failures that bricked the last one for half an hour at a time.

Actually I had two of those box top Cherokee's. I forgot about the one that burst into flames in the driveway. For no apparent reason. Good thing I was home that day.

Had a 78 CJ-7 way back when, TPI Corvette, dry sump oil system, Atlas II, CO's front and read, 40's, blah blah blah. It was fun, but at some point it just got boring.

I had two late 90's I6 Cherokee's that had similar issues. This was well before I ever really got into off-roading as a serious hobby, but both were electrical nightmare shit piles. Completely impractical and unaffordable for a high schooler...

It is a blast. They make you do a session on the normal carts before you can rent a shifter cart and really get crazy, as I recall.
They also open the track to motorcycles, which is fun to watch when you aren't driving a cart.

Only half the story, due to this foreign automakers opened plants in the USA and later NAFTA allowed work to shift to Mexico & Canada.

Due to this and the American love of SUV's both BMW & Mercedes make all their SUV's here and exported them around the world.

Now you know and knowing is half the battle!
