Find me a buyer for my truck for the amount I owe and I'd be all over a 1st gen.

 

I'd say 200lbs or less, as it only takes two dudes to pick up and the majority of the guys on this site seem to be able to handle it...
I helped my buddy when he picked his up and it's didn't feel that heavy to me.

And that brings up the question...
is it long term weight that causes it, or is there an overload point where they just spread?
Or maybe both, light weight over long term or heavy weight with an oh shit factor.

I would think so, even having a 1st gen, I would not want a bed rack mounted to the rails, even though there seems to be quite a bit of success doing it. The sheet metal is just not that thick, like say an old school Ferd or Chivy.
My canopy is prolly around that 200lb mark as well, I've never had anything heavier than a canoe up there though.

 

The kind of rack I want has gotta weigh like 75 lbs? Tent won't be on full time, and I have bed stiffeners. I'd be ashamed if I still had issues.

 

But, you'll be in the tent occasionally.
And what if you have company stay the night and engage in nocturnal activities?

 

My 6' topper might weight 120lbs. Guessing lighter.

Super easy for 2 people to remove.

 

I think the more responsible answer is to go do speed runs on Black Bear. If the truck happens to tumble down the mountain, spend the insurance check on something better. Looks like 12-15K will get you a nice low mileage AC or DC 1st gen.

 

I'll be doing some bed stiffeners before I put the rack/tent on, as a preventive measure. I kinda understand a bed rack doing it (hell it was doing it to my 1st gen) but kinda sad that a cap will cause that too.
