Bind weed. Most effective is to pull it out but you have to get the roots or it will grow back. Its a vine so you need to trace it back to the base to get the entire thing.

You can spray it too but the grass will suffer a bit.

Thanks. Is it a sign that I don't water enough? This yard in the back gets hit with a lot of sun.

I run my sprinklers only a few minutes every couple of days. I think I'll have to do the screwdriver test and get a strategy going.

Most likely lack of water if that is all you watering right now. If the grass is healthy it fills in all the space and keeps weeds to a minimum. Like this:

Denver Water has a suggested watering guide on their website(they mail a flier too) Breaks it down by month, frequency, and sprinkler head type. I follow that minus a 2 minutes and it works for me.

As already stated, that's bind/vine weed. It is one of the absolute hardest to get rid of. You can try pulling it, but it's a rhizome based root. That means underground it looks about like it does above ground - long and spread out, like noodles that can go two feet deep or more. It's also one of the ones that breaks off really easy at the surface, and the roots can just keep coming back for ages. I've dug down a foot before and taken every little bit I could find out, and it's still come back from even deeper than that. It's largely impervious to pesticides, which can kill the leaves but are pretty ineffective against the roots. Some places (CSU extension office be the first place to check) have mites you can release that will attack it. The best thing you can do is try to keep it pulled on the surface. Deny it leaves long enough and the roots will eventually die, but it's not a quick process, especially in a decent lawn which yours looks to be. Your mowing can also help. Keep the deck set relatively high and mow every week, taking no more than 1/3 off the top. The taller grass helps shade out the weeds as well as the ground, improving water retention.

As far as watering, 'a few minutes every couple of days' is kind of a shot in the dark, as is a screwdriver test. What you really need is an irrigation system audit. Many municipalities will do those for free, but you can also do them yourself. It involves getting some little measuring or uniform sized cups, spreading them around, and then running the system for a set time. From that you can calculate how much water the system puts down, and then set your time accordingly. You generally want to water longer less often to encourage root growth, rather than every day for a short time. And by longer, you still want to break it up to give it time to soak in instead of saturating the surface and then running off and doing nothing - to if 20 minutes total, then 10 on, 10 off, 10 on again. Controllers vary, but you can usually create a cycle of shorts and then have it repeat x times. If you're actually in Denver Water, you're under watering restrictions, which means you can only water on certain days and between certain times - which can help you set your schedule, and it's usually based on best times to water anyway. I don't know that they do system audits though. You can find more info at http://www.denverwater.org/Conservation/WaterUseRulesRegulations/SummerWateringRules/ including about for how long to water different things (grass, shrubs, trees, etc.). As gramps said, it's a good starting point, but you do have to adjust for the local conditions and the type of grass. He's got a lot of mature shade trees around there and wouldn't need to water as much as you might with a southern exposure, no shade lawn.

    Bind weed

That and cockroaches will be the only things that survive a nuclear fallout.

I built a shed in November of yesteryear.

Come the next spring there was bind weed climbing up an interior 2x4. Alive. In zero sunlight.

I have my areas of expertise. :D Former landscape architect, and as a renter well-versed in walking the fine line of how little water can I get away with because I'm cheap vs ignorant property owners who think their Kentucky bluegrass lawn should be full and lush in August, in this climate, with southern exposure and no shade.

Met up with the @odomandr 's this morning and ran Greer Road.
This is the only pic I took. Had a great time, we ran the entire network of roads.
