So, my rear passenger side drum was making noise, and it was grooved.

    Had both turned.

    Installed new shoes.

I put it all together, spun the wheel until the shoes started hitting the drum on each side by adjusting the star wheel thing. Then put it back together, drive it forward and back, brakes worked.

Parking brake easily went to the floor, no drag. Popped the center console, adjusting the mechanism under there and i now am able to get it to grab, with wheels in the air i can push the parking brake pedal all the way down and am still able to turn the wheels by hand using my body weight. But I'm almost out of length on the adjuster rod thing, it's been adjusted an inch from where it was before.

    Am i doing something wrong?

There's also about 5 degrees of rotation before it'll grab. Which seems not right at all being that the drums should be directly tied to the wheels.

One technique I've heard is to adjust the star wheel/adjuster until the shoes are firmly planted against the drum (you can't adjust it anymore). Back it off ~15 clicks and test. Then, check the parking brake.

Drum brakes... ugh. Don't miss driving old stuff with four wheel drums. I still remember the first time I experienced brake fade in an aggressive braking moment; did not know if the car was going to stop in the distance I needed.

I ended up using that way, then it got stuck since it didn't want to un adjust.

But i basically got them dragging just a little bit again and then it was only a smaller amount of adjustment under the console.

What a headache, all to save Toyota a little money.

Be sure to buy the most EAF one.

So it costs twice as much and breaks within a month. :crapstorm:

At least you don't have an access cab. It was kind of a pain to install haha.

I wonder if they'll change the way it mounts on the access cabs? I'm not sure how much it can be changed if at all though :notsure:
