The two I am most familiar with are Actual Cash Value, which means you get the depreciated value of the vehicle (ie, what they think it would have sold for), and Replacement Cost, which means you get a brand new vehicle of the same type based on current prices. The latter policy is more expensive, and sometimes only tacked on as 'new car protection' or some other sort of benefit for like the first three years of the car's ownership or something.

I had Allstate for years, and I was also always told no additional stuff needed to cover things like bumpers and lifts. But I also always read my policy, and there were caps on aftermarket things. Or even contents and such. They weren't going to cover a $10k stereo system they didn't know about, or that $3k cd collection in your back seat. But you having that specific conversation multiple times like that... I switched to Geico when Allstate bumped my rate by like 25%. During that process, and sometimes with renewals, they specifically ask about any modifications to the vehicle. Down to getting new wheels. They put a note on the account (not policy) about it, and as long as they know about it, you're covered. But if they don't, you're not. There's a catch though, as I believe some others on this forum have learned - if you list out full modifications, they can decide that your vehicle has been 'modified for off road use' and not insure you or cancel your policy because of it and there is no standard definition of 'modified for off road use' even within the company. The tales I read had anything from just a lift to that and larger tires and full armor including bumpers, etc.

Back on the topic of being covered though, this also applies to home and renter's insurance, and I strongly suggest you check that policy while you're at it. There's been a cap on things like jewelry for as long as I've known what insurance was, where you have to get listed or additional coverage if you own more than that. But in recent years they have implemented more and more caps. For example, cellular communications devices are now typically excluded completely (not even a cap). Anything related to a home business is limited. Electronics, such as tvs and entertainment centers have a cap (and it's stupid low for what these can cost). Even 'data processing equipment' (ie, your computer, business related or not) is also subject to a cap, and while your typical Dell home machine isn't going to be an issue, a gaming computer could be.

So yeah, look at your renewal docs (they often list the presence of these caps, but not the amounts) and your actual policy docs. If you didn't keep your copy of the policy doc or the amendments, you can have them send you one or usually get it via your online account. Make sure you look over it and compare to what you own, and you may need to have a talk with your agent. Being covered for 50k of personal property, and then finding out that all of the stuff that makes you need that 50k is capped and basically half or more of your policy value isn't actually covering anything... I need to do this myself, because while the additional riders needed may cost more (or scheduled property as sometimes done), that may balance out with the drop in the overall coverage amount.

I love curling. Grew up on the border in northern NY and was a member of a curling club in Cornwall Ontario. Played for quite a few years.

One of the drinks I feel in love with in Jamaica was the Purple Rain. Yesterday I tried making some and took me 4 drinks to figure it out. But now I think I got it down.
