Do you know how they get them down? I know one of the reasons we got a few Chinooks here for CO Guard was to help the forrest service remove old wrecks that people still called in all the time as recent problems... "Ah ma'am is there an orange X painted on the vehicle you are Reporting, Why yes..."

I usually suggest the warm spring at the top of bridal veil falls to all of the people driving UTVs. It's tricky to get to, but about 100ft from the falls in the middle of the river there's a nice calm hot springs tub.

You're welcome... And pass it on.

    This and that...

Found another article. Apparently a Hummer made it to the top and burnt out his winch hauling both out without incident. Sucks that all these guys had to do was pay a $600 fine. Should be banned from operating off road vehicles in CO or something that would piss them off not to come back again.

    The rest of the story....

    http://www.4x4wire.com/lists/toyota/200008/msg00142.html

Two brothers from Texas, with the help of a Humvee and a powerful winch,
    > finally got their vehicles off the side of a 12,000-foot mountain in the
    > rugged San Juans near Silverton after being stranded there for nearly a
    > week.
    >
    > Alan and Gary Hatcher got stuck Monday after driving their DodgeRam and
    > JeepWrangler off road onto a steep slope of Houghton Mountain, where they
    > could neither get back up nor get down.
    >
    > Their ordeal ended Saturday afternoon, said San Juan County Undersheriff
    > Charlie Moore.
    >
    > "They were able to get a Hummer up there with a winch on it and were able to
    > winch both vehicles uphill to a point where it was safe for someone to get
    > in and drive them out the same route that they used going in," Moore said
    > Sunday. "All vehicles are off the mountain. The only damage I'm aware of is
    > the winch on the Hummer reportedly burned out from overwork."
    >
    > Two all-terrain vehicles pulled the trucks on unstable ground in what one
    > man who helped remove the vehicles called an "extremely dangerous" five-hour
    > operation.
    >
    > "If one of them were to slip and fall off the side, it would pull the other
    > off," said John Gilleland, who helped with his Hummer. "I can't imagine
    > anyone surviving a roll that far down a slope."
    >
    > A Bureau of Land Management official supervised the rescue.
    >
    > Gilleland, who is from Durango, said dozens watched the salvage.
    >
    > All week, the brothers hatched plans to remove the vehicles. In Silverton,
    > about an hour's drive away, they became the subject of remarks ranging from
    > mild reproach to ridicule.
    >
    > "I don't feel sorry for them. If they fine them, I think that's OK," said
    > Glen Wiebe, a backcountry tour driver in Silverton, about 200 miles
    > southwest of Denver.
    >
    >
    > "Words can't express my amazement and frustration at those two guys," Moore
    > said. "There are abundant signs in the area that say, 'Do Not Drive Off the
    > Designated Roads' and yet they drive off a mile or two across the tundra.
    >
    > "Then they find themselves on a steep mountainside where only an elk, a
    > deer, a bear or a marmot belongs. Nothing with wheels on it should have been
    > anywhere near where they ended up."
    >
    > The Bureau of Land Management cited the Hatchers for driving across the

    > "I hope they learned their lesson and I hope others become aware of the
    > problems one can find if you wander too far off the beaten path," Moore
    > said.

Ok. I was asking too much. Got it.

How about lakes or ponds where we can have a family camping trip and the kids (me too) can get in the water (legally). Any spots anybody would give the thumbs up?

I have seen "Tubers" through Pagosa Springs (San Juan River) and Durango (Animas River).

I think issue is not that you can't get in the water (Provided it's has public access) it's that in Colorado it's usually shallow and cold (Alpine lakes/ tarns wise) outside of the Colorado, Arkansas & Gunnison Rivers.

Glad they found them, but the damage was done.

Somethings going to need to change or we'll all loose access. This is all too common recently.

The article does state the side by sides were rentals. I think the companies renting these out to people to use on public land need to take more responsibility on educating renters on public land use. :notsure:

But the reality is the ONLY way things will change is people doing something about it. Any attempt at regulating rental companies or UTVs will fall on its face as soon as the manufactures dump a few million dollars into campaigns against it. Same is true for anything else in this country. In the end whoever has money WILL override facts, truth, morals, ethics.

Wouldn't do them any good if all the trails are closed....

It's in their best interest to keep them open.
